Lord Vishwakarma is the cosmic engineer mentioned in the Rigveda - the maker of Vishnu's Sudarshan Chakra, Shiva's Trishul, Indra's Vajra, Lanka, Dwarka, Indraprastha, and the heavenly vimanas. The September 17 date is fixed by Kanya Sankranti (solar transit into Virgo) and is celebrated most intensely in West Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, Tripura, and across industrial India. In Eastern India the festival is known as Biswakarma Puja - same deity, same vidhi, just the regional spelling. Factories shut for the day, vehicles are not driven, and every tool from a tailor's needle to a 1000-ton press is treated as sacred for 24 hours. Step by step
Day before (September 16): thoroughly clean the workplace, factory floor, workshop, office, or home work-area. Wash all tools, vehicles, and machines.
एक दिन पहले (16 सितंबर): कार्यस्थल, फैक्ट्री, कार्यशाला, कार्यालय, या घर के कार्य-क्षेत्र की पूरी सफाई। सभी औजार, वाहन, मशीनें धोएँ।
Morning of September 17 (6-11 AM is the most powerful muhurat): bathe, wear fresh yellow or red clothes, and set up the Vishwakarma altar in the cleanest, most prominent corner.

Place: Vishwakarma photo/murti on a yellow cloth-covered chowki, with ghee diya, camphor, akshat, sandalwood paste, marigold garlands, banana stems, and mango leaves.

All workers, family members, or team members gather. Senior-most person performs sankalp: 'On this Kanya Sankranti day, we worship Lord Vishwakarma for safe and prosperous work in the year ahead.'

Sprinkle akshat (turmeric-rice) over all tools, machines, and vehicles. Offer flowers - especially marigold and yellow - on each major item.

Perform aarti with camphor. Circle the entire workspace clockwise once, taking the aarti flame to every machine, vehicle, and tool.

Crucial: tools and machines are NOT operated for the entire day. Vehicles are NOT driven. Let them 'rest' - this is the core of the puja.

Evening: light extra diyas around the workplace, do a brief second aarti. The next day (September 18), resume work with fresh energy and Vishwakarma's blessing for the year.

Set up the altar in your work area or near your desk/laptop. Lay out laptop, monitor, mouse, keyboard, and any other tools. Decorate with marigold flowers, light a ghee diya, apply tilak to each device, sprinkle akshat, chant the Vishwakarma mantra 11 times, perform a brief aarti, offer bhog. Do not use the laptop/devices for work that day - treat them as resting. Total time 30-45 minutes.
Traditional rule: NO. The vehicle is being worshipped that day and should rest. Most observant families avoid driving entirely. If you absolutely must drive (medical emergency, essential travel), the puja should be completed first and a brief apology offered to Vishwakarma. Many factories give workers the day off precisely so they can observe this rule. The cab/taxi industry in industrial states often shuts down on Vishwakarma Puja day.
Slight regional difference. Vishwakarma Puja is the September 17 (Kanya Sankranti) observance celebrated across most of India, especially eastern India. Vishwakarma Jayanti specifically refers to the birth-day of Lord Vishwakarma, observed on Magh Shukla Tritiya (January-February) in some regions. The September Vishwakarma Puja is far more widely celebrated and is the festival most people refer to as 'Vishwakarma Puja' or 'Biswakarma Puja'.
For essential-service factories (power plants, hospitals, water utilities), perform the puja at the beginning of the day and continue operations with reverence. The skeleton crew running the machines should each receive blessing and prasad. Schedule any non-essential machine maintenance for the day before. The intent matters more than the strict no-operation rule - if the work serves society, Vishwakarma understands.
