On Dhanteras, three divine events happened simultaneously: 1. Goddess Lakshmi emerged from Samudra Manthan — she chose this day to be born. Any offering to her today is accepted 1,000x more. 2. Bhagwan Dhanvantari (the physician of the gods, Vishnu's avatar) emerged from the ocean holding the amrit kalash. This is also called Dhanvantari Trayodashi — the birthday of Ayurveda. 3. Kuber (god of wealth) finalised his wealth distribution for the year on Dhanteras.

Even a small purchase invites Lakshmi. The item matters — pick from this list.

1. Gold or Silver (even 1 gram) — The #1 Dhanteras purchase. Gold is Lakshmi's metal; silver is Chandra's (moon). Both multiply wealth. If budget is tight, even a 1-gram coin or a silver sikka is enough. Buy during the Pradosh muhurat.

2. Utensils (Bartan) — Especially copper, brass, steel or silver utensils. Never iron or aluminium on Dhanteras. A new thali, kalash, spoon, or glass. Keep it in the puja room until Diwali morning, then use.

3. Broom (Jhaadu) — A humble but sacred purchase. The broom represents Lakshmi — where cleanliness is, she lives. Replace the old broom on Dhanteras. Never buy brooms on Tuesday, Thursday or the day of Amavasya.

4. A Kuber Yantra or Shree Yantra — Energised yantras kept in a locker or puja room attract continuous wealth. Bronze or silver yantra is best.

5. Dhania (Coriander Seeds) — 'Dhan' literally means wealth. Buying a small packet of dhania on Dhanteras symbolises sowing seeds for prosperity. After puja, sprinkle a few seeds in every corner of the home.

6. Vehicles, Electronics, Property Papers — Big-ticket items (car, bike, phone, property registration) done on Dhanteras multiply in value. Even if actual delivery is later, make the token payment on Dhanteras.

7. Lakshmi-Ganesh Idol — Buy fresh idols of Lakshmi and Ganesh together (never separate — always as a pair). These are used in Diwali puja two days later. Idol should be silver, bronze, or clay — avoid plastic.

⛔ NEVER buy on Dhanteras:

• Iron, sharp objects (knives, scissors)
• Black clothes
• Glass items (considered fragile like Lakshmi's presence)
• Aluminium utensils
• Dark/black-tinted electronics (some exceptions for phones)

Step 1 — Home preparation (before evening): Clean the entire home thoroughly. Draw rangoli at the entrance with small footprints facing inward (Lakshmi's footsteps). Light the main lamp at sunset.

Step 2 — Create the puja setup: In the puja room, place a red cloth on a wooden chowki. Place Lakshmi-Ganesh-Kuber idols/photos. Add a Dhanvantari photo beside (he is Vishnu's avatar — physician). In front, keep a bowl with gold/silver items bought today, along with dhania seeds, a broom (new), and any cash/jewellery from your locker.

Step 3 — Sankalp: Face east, sprinkle water around you, take sankalp: 'On this Dhanteras I worship Lakshmi, Kuber, Ganesh and Dhanvantari for wealth, health, and prosperity of my family for the coming year.'

Step 4 — Abhishek & Shringaar: Bathe idols with panchamrit, then clean water. Apply chandan tilak. Offer kumkum, haldi, akshat, red flowers (lotus preferred for Lakshmi).

Step 5 — Main Puja: Light a large ghee diya. Light 13 small diyas around the main diya (symbolising 13x multiplication).

Chant 108 times: 'ॐ श्रीं ह्रीं श्रीं कमले कमलालये प्रसीद प्रसीद ॐ श्रीं ह्रीं श्रीं महालक्ष्म्यै नमः॥'

Then chant 108 times: 'ॐ यक्षाय कुबेराय वैश्रवणाय धन-धान्याधिपतये धन-धान्य समृद्धिं मे देहि दापय स्वाहा॥' (Kuber Mantra)

Step 6 — Naivedya: Offer kheer, laddoos, mithai, fruits, and a small bowl with cooked rice + ghee. After puja, distribute to family.

Step 7 — Yama Deepam (MUST DO — 5:48 PM): Take one earthen diya filled with mustard oil, 4 wicks. Light it. Carry it to the MAIN DOOR of your home and place it facing south. Chant: 'मृत्युना दण्डपाशाभ्यां कालेन श्यामला सह। त्रयोदश्यां दीपदानात सूर्यजः प्रीयतां मम॥'

This single diya is offered to Yamraj. It is the ONLY diya of the year offered to him. It protects every family member from untimely death for a full year.

Step 8 — Lakshmi Aarti: Perform 'Om Jai Lakshmi Mata' aarti and 'Om Jai Jagdish Hare'.

Step 9 — Keep all Dhanteras purchases in the puja room overnight. Use/wear them from Diwali morning.

Most people know that Lakshmi is worshipped on Dhanteras. Far fewer know that Kuber — the treasurer of the gods — is worshipped simultaneously and is equally important for material wealth.

Who Is Kuber?

Kuber is the Lord of Wealth (Dhanapati) and the treasurer of the celestial realm. He is the guardian of the North direction (he rules Uttara), and sits atop Kailash (not far from Shiva). He carries a money bag (nidhi) and a gem-studded club. Unlike Lakshmi, whose wealth is the flow of prosperity, Kuber's domain is stored wealth — savings, investments, assets, and treasure.

In simple terms:

• Lakshmi brings the wealth into your home
• Kuber ensures it stays, grows, and is well-stored

Worshipping only Lakshmi without Kuber is like turning on an income tap without building a reservoir to hold the water.

Kuber's Connection to Dhanteras:

Dhanteras falls on Kartik Krishna Trayodashi — the 13th lunar day in the dark fortnight of Kartik. On this day in Vedic tradition, Kuber is said to descend from his celestial treasury and make his annual accounting of mortal wealth. By worshipping him on Dhanteras, you signal that you acknowledge and invite his presence.

How to Perform Kuber Puja on Dhanteras:

1. Set up: Create a small altar with yellow cloth (Kuber's color). Place a Kuber yantra or an image of Kuber (or write "ॐ श्री कुबेराय नमः" on yellow cloth with kumkum). 2. Light a yellow or golden diya 3. Offer: Yellow sweets (laddoo from besan), turmeric, gold or yellow flowers, coins (new or old) 4. Chant Kuber Mantra 108 times: ॐ यक्षाय कुबेराय वैश्रवणाय धनधान्याधिपतये धनधान्यसमृद्धिं मे देहि दापय स्वाहा॥ (Om Yakshaya Kuberaya Vaishravanaya Dhanadhanyadhipataye, Dhanadhanayasamriddhim Me Dehi Dapaya Svaha) 5. Why Keep Your Cash Box / Locker Open During Puja:

On Dhanteras, many families keep their safe, locker, or almirah open and place it facing the altar. The intention: Lakshmi and Kuber "enter" and bless the stored wealth. Some place a few coins or a small gemstone inside the safe after puja — the puja blessing transfers to the contents.

Most Dhanteras content focuses on shopping and Lakshmi puja. But there is a second, less-known ritual of Dhanteras that is considered equally important by traditional households: Yama Deepam — the lamp offered to Yama, the god of death, to protect the family from untimely death.

Why Offer a Lamp to Yama on a Wealth Day?

Dhanteras literally means "Dhan" (wealth) + "Teras" (thirteenth) — but it is also Yamadeepdaan day. On Kartik Krishna Trayodashi, Yama (the Lord of Death) is believed to be particularly active as he does his annual dharmic accounting. By lighting a lamp in his direction (South), householders acknowledge his power and request his grace: "We recognise you. Please protect our family from premature death this year."

This is why Dhanteras is considered not just a prosperity festival but also a health and longevity festival.

The Yama Deepam Ritual:

1. Time: Sandhya kaal (just after sunset) — between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM on 28 October 2026 2. Direction: The lamp must face South — Yama's direction. This is the one exception to the general Hindu rule of facing North or East. 3. Lamp type: A single-wick diya made of clay. Fill with sesame oil (til ka tel) — NOT ghee. (Yama and Saturn are associated with sesame/sesame oil; ghee is for auspicious deities.) 4. Location: Near the main entrance of the house, threshold, or in front of the house — NOT inside. 5. Mantra: ॐ मृत्युना पाशदण्डाभ्यां कालेन श्यामया सह। त्रयोदश्यां दीपदानात् सूर्यजः प्रीयतामिति॥ (By this lamp-offering on Trayodashi, may the son of the Sun [Yama] be pleased, and protect us from death's noose.) 6. After the lamp: Do not extinguish it — let it burn down on its own. If it blows out, it can be re-lit once.

The Three-Lamp Dhanteras Setup:

Traditional families light 3 lamps: 1. North-facing — for Kuber (wealth) 2. East-facing — for Lakshmi (prosperity) 3. South-facing — for Yama (protection from death and disease)

Lakshmi doesn't enter dirty homes. She doesn't stay in disorganised homes. And she doesn't bless families that hoard without generosity. These are the Puranic principles behind the Dhanteras-Diwali preparation rituals.

The 9-Step Lakshmi Invitation Protocol:

STEP 1 — Deep Clean (3–5 days before Dhanteras): Lakshmi Puja's first requirement is a completely clean home. This is not a surface clean — cupboards emptied, floors scrubbed, cobwebs removed from corners (especially ceiling corners), windows cleaned. The cleaning itself is the first act of Lakshmi invitation.

STEP 2 — Remove Broken, Cracked, or Dead Items: Cracked mirrors, broken photo frames, dead plants, non-working clocks, any object that is broken and not repaired — all of these are considered "Alaxmi" (the reverse of Lakshmi) attractors. Remove or repair before Dhanteras.

STEP 3 — The Rangoli (Lakshmi's Footprints): Draw or buy rangoli stickers for Lakshmi's footprints — pointing from the main entrance INTO the home, not outward. The goddess enters through the threshold and moves toward the puja corner. This direction matters.

STEP 4 — Lakshmi's Favorite Color: Decorate with yellow, red, and pink flowers. Marigold is Lakshmi's flower. Line the entrance and puja area with fresh marigold garlands. Avoid white flowers on Dhanteras/Diwali.

STEP 5 — Open All Doors and Windows at Sunset: At the exact time of Pradosh Kaal (the auspicious dusk window — typically 5:30–7:00 PM on 28 October 2026 for Dhanteras), open all doors, windows, and cupboards briefly. Light lamps throughout the home. The intention: Lakshmi is invited to see and enter every corner.

STEP 6 — Light Lamps in Every Room: At minimum, one diya in every room. Traditionally, a minimum of 13 diyas on Dhanteras (for Trayodashi — the 13th lunar day). Place one at the main entrance, one at each corner, one in the kitchen, one in the puja room, and one in each bedroom.

STEP 7 — Akhand Diya (The Permanent Lamp): In the puja room, light an akhand (continuous) diya that burns from Dhanteras through Diwali night — 3 days continuous. Keep a stock of ghee and refill as needed. This is the unbroken invitation — the door of the house's light stays open for Lakshmi.

STEP 8 — Give Something Away: Lakshmi requires flow. On Dhanteras, give at least a small amount to: a temple, a person in need, a charity. The principle is that when you give generously, Lakshmi perceives your home as a place that can handle abundance (it doesn't hoard and block flow).

STEP 9 — The Main Puja with the Newly Purchased Items: Whatever you purchase on Dhanteras (gold, silver, utensil) — place it on the puja thali during the Lakshmi puja. You are presenting it to Lakshmi: "This is what I received from you. I offer it back to you for your blessing before using it." The items become blessed and auspicious for use.

In practical terms, it is also one of the few days when jewellers offer their best rates due to volume — making it genuinely a good purchasing day beyond the spiritual significance.

The 5 Golden Rules of Dhanteras Gold Buying:

Rule 1 — Always Buy BIS Hallmarked Gold: India's Bureau of Indian Standards mandates hallmarking for gold jewellery above 2 grams. Look for the BIS logo + purity (916 for 22K, 999 for 24K) + HUID (Hallmark Unique ID) — a 6-digit alphanumeric code you can verify on the BIS Care app.

Rule 2 — Understand Making Charges: The real cost of jewellery = Gold price × weight + Making charges + GST Making charges can range from 8% to 30% of gold value. Gold coins and bars have negligible making charges (1-2%). For investment-grade purchase, prefer coins over jewellery.

Rule 3 — 22K vs 24K:

• 24K gold (999 purity): pure gold, soft, not suitable for jewellery. Use for investment coins/bars.
• 22K gold (916 purity): 91.6% gold + 8.4% alloy. Standard for jewellery. Strong enough to wear.

Rule 4 — Digital Gold Is Also Valid: In 2026, digital gold (available via Paytm, Google Pay, MMTC-PAMP) is considered equally auspicious by most spiritual authorities. You can buy ₹1 worth of digital gold on Dhanteras and it counts as Dhanteras gold purchase.

Rule 5 — Small Is Fine: The shastras specify that the act of purchase, not the quantity, carries the Dhanteras blessing. A ₹100 silver coin or ₹5 worth of digital gold purchased with intention at the correct muhurat is fully valid Dhanteras purchase.

What If You Cannot Afford Gold or Silver?

The tradition originally allowed the purchase of any new metal item on Dhanteras. In many regions, buying a new kitchen utensil (steel or copper) is the traditional Dhanteras purchase for households that cannot afford gold. This is completely shastra-valid.
