Krishna Janmabhoomi, Mathura: The Birthplace Shrine

Tradition tells that King Kansa, warned by a divine voice that Devaki's eighth son would be his destroyer, imprisoned Devaki and Vasudeva and killed each of their children at birth. When Krishna was born at midnight, the prison guards fell into a divine sleep, the chains loosened, and Vasudeva was able to carry the infant across a flooded Yamuna to safety in Gokul.
