What does Akal Bodhon mean?
Bodhon refers to invoking or awakening the Goddess; akal indicates an unusual time. In Bengali Durga Puja tradition, autumnal worship is linked to Rama seeking Durga’s blessing before confronting Ravana.
The widely told narrative belongs particularly to the Bengali Krittivasi Ramayana tradition. It should not be presented as a word-for-word episode found in every version of the Ramayana. Hindu storytelling has many regional and devotional layers, and this distinction helps readers appreciate the story without erasing other traditions.
The story of 108 blue lotuses
In the popular retelling, Rama prepares 108 blue lotuses for Durga’s worship. When one flower is missing, the lotus-eyed Rama offers to substitute his own eye. The Goddess intervenes and blesses his devotion before the sacrifice is carried out.
Read this as devotional symbolism: sincerity and surrender are valued above a perfect inventory of offerings. It is not an instruction to injure yourself or perform dangerous acts. Ordinary flowers available locally are enough for a simple household prayer; the story does not impose a shopping list on every devotee.
How Durga Puja and Dussehra meet
Both celebrations evoke the victory of dharma, but their stories and public rituals are not identical. Durga Puja centres the Goddess and her victory over Mahishasura. Many Dussehra traditions celebrate Rama’s victory over Ravana through Ramlila and symbolic effigy burning.
In Bengal, Bijoya Dashami marks farewell to the Goddess and greetings shared with family and community. Elsewhere Vijayadashami may emphasize Shami worship, learning or tool worship. Recognizing these differences is more accurate than saying every household follows one single rite.
Read and celebrate in 2026

Sharad Navratri begins October 11, 2026; the nine-day devotional sequence ends October 19 and Dussehra is October 20. Ashtami/Navami observances depend on the local panchang. Consult your local panchang for a specific rite’s timing.
Read the story together, ask children what courage and compassion mean, or visit a local Durga Puja respectfully. Avoid ranking regional traditions as better or worse. For dates, consult Drik Panchang’s 2026 Navratri and Vijayadashami calendars; for the narrative, distinguish the Krittivasi tradition from Valmiki’s Ramayana.
Frequently Asked Questions
