Narasimha Jayanti 2026: Date, Story of Hiranyakashipu, Puja Vidhi & Powerful Mantras
The Most Fearsome Form Vishnu Ever Took
Of Vishnu's 10 avatars, Narasimha is the only one whose story still makes children's eyes widen and adults fold their hands in awe.
Half man, half lion. Eyes burning red. Claws like swords. Roar that shook the mountains.
He was born to break a single boon — a boon that had made the demon king Hiranyakashipu effectively immortal. And Vishnu chose to be born this way only because a 5-year-old child refused to stop chanting Hari's name.
Narasimha Jayanti 2026 falls on Monday, 11 May 2026 — Vaishakha Shukla Chaturdashi. The puja must be performed at sandhya kaal (twilight, between 4 PM and 7 PM) — the exact time Narasimha appeared from the pillar.
While most Vishnu festivals celebrate gentleness and grace, Narasimha Jayanti celebrates the moment grace turns into ferocity. Devotees who fear enemies, lawsuits, evil eye (nazar), black magic, or dangerous travel observe this vrat for raksha (protection).
🙏 The Narasimha Kavacha mantra is the most powerful protection mantra in all of Vaishnav tradition — and Narasimha Jayanti is the best day to begin its 11-day continuous chanting.
Narasimha Jayanti 2026 — Tithi, Sandhya Muhurat & Vrat Timing
📅 Date: Monday, 11 May 2026 🕒 Chaturdashi Tithi Begins: 8:32 AM, 10 May 2026 🕒 Chaturdashi Tithi Ends: 11:11 AM, 11 May 2026
Most Important Time — Sandhya Puja: 4:35 PM – 7:18 PM, 11 May (twilight, when Narasimha appeared) Madhyahna Sankalp: 11:51 AM – 12:46 PM Best Mantra Jap Time: Pre-dawn (4:30 AM – 5:30 AM) and Sandhya kaal
Why sandhya kaal is critical: Hiranyakashipu's boon said he could not be killed in day or night. Narasimha killed him at sandhya — the moment that is neither day nor night. So evening puja on Narasimha Jayanti is non-negotiable. Morning puja alone is incomplete.
Vrat begins: Sunrise of 11 May (after Snan + Sankalp) Vrat parana: Sunrise of 12 May (after morning Narasimha aarti)
Avoid: Rahu Kaal (7:11 AM – 8:51 AM on Monday) — do not start sankalp during this window. Instead start at 9:00 AM onwards.
The Hiranyakashipu-Prahlad Katha — Why Vishnu Took This Form

Hiranyakashipu was a powerful asura king. His brother Hiranyaksha was killed by Vishnu's Varaha avatar. Furious, Hiranyakashipu vowed: 'I will kill Vishnu and end every devotee of His.'
He performed tapasya so severe that Brahma Himself appeared and asked, 'What boon do you want?' Hiranyakashipu, knowing the rules of boons, asked carefully:
'Let me not be killed by any creature you have created. Let me not die inside or outside any house. Let me not die by day or by night. Let me not die on land, in water, or in the sky. Let me not die by any weapon, animate or inanimate. Let no man, no animal kill me. Let no god, no demon kill me.'
Brahma granted everything. Hiranyakashipu was now effectively immortal.
He declared himself God. He banned Vishnu's name across his kingdom. Anyone caught chanting 'Om Namo Narayanaya' was tortured and killed.
Then his own son was born — Prahlad. From the womb itself, Prahlad had heard Narada Muni teaching his mother about Vishnu. The child was born a devotee.
At age 5, Prahlad would not stop chanting 'Hari, Hari, Narayan'. Hiranyakashipu was furious. He asked Prahlad — 'Who is the strongest in the universe?' Prahlad answered without hesitation: 'Lord Hari.'
Hiranyakashipu tried to kill his own son. He threw Prahlad off a cliff — Prahlad survived chanting Hari's name. He fed Prahlad poison — it turned into amrit. He sent his sister Holika (who had a fire-proof shawl) to burn Prahlad — the shawl flew onto Prahlad and Holika burned to death (this is why we celebrate Holi). He had elephants trample Prahlad — the tusks broke. He had Prahlad bitten by serpents — they hugged him.
Finally, in his rage, Hiranyakashipu pointed to a stone pillar in the throne room and screamed: 'You say your Vishnu is everywhere? Then is He inside this pillar too? PROVE IT.'
With a kick, he shattered the pillar.
From the broken pillar emerged a sound — a roar so loud that the seven seas churned. Then, slowly, a form appeared: half man, half lion. Eyes red. Claws extended. Narasimha.
He grabbed Hiranyakashipu. He carried him to the threshold of the throne room — neither inside nor outside. He waited until dusk — neither day nor night. He sat on the threshold and placed Hiranyakashipu on His own thigh — neither land, water nor sky. He was not man and not animal — beyond Brahma's boon. And with His claws — neither weapon, nor animate, nor inanimate — He tore Hiranyakashipu apart.
The asura died screaming. Prahlad walked up to the still-furious Narasimha and bowed peacefully. The boy's hand on Narasimha's matted mane calmed Him. Narasimha placed His hand on Prahlad's head and made him the next king — and a great devotee whose lineage would later include Bali.
The lesson: God breaks every law of nature when His devotee is in danger.
Step-by-Step Narasimha Jayanti Puja Vidhi
Day Before (Trayodashi — May 10): Eat one satvik meal before sunset. Clean your puja room. Prepare an idol or printed photo of Narasimha (preferably the Lakshmi-Narasimha form — calm Narasimha with Lakshmi on His thigh).
Step 1 — Morning Snan & Sankalp (5:30 AM, May 11): Bathe before sunrise with a few drops of Ganga jal in the bucket. Wear clean red or yellow clothes. Sit in your puja room facing east. Sankalp:
'I, [name], on this Vaishakha Shukla Chaturdashi, take this Narasimha Jayanti vrat for protection from all enemies — visible and invisible — and for the welfare of my family. Om Ugram Veeram Mahavishnum Jvalantam Sarvatomukham, Nrisimham Bhishanam Bhadram Mrityur Mrityum Namamyaham.'
Step 2 — Mantra Jap (Morning): Chant the Narasimha Maha Mantra (above) at least 108 times before noon. If possible, complete 11 malas (1188 jap) over the day.
Step 3 — Phalahar (whole day): No grains, no salt (only sendha namak), no onion/garlic. Permitted: fruits, milk, sabudana, makhana. Stay awake. Avoid anger, lying, harsh speech.
Step 4 — Sandhya Puja (4:35 PM – 7:18 PM, May 11) — THE MAIN PUJA:
- Bathe again at sunset. Wear fresh clothes.
- Place the Narasimha idol on a red cloth on a wooden chowki.
- Bathe the idol with panchamrit (milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar) — then with Ganga jal.
- Apply yellow chandan + kumkum tilak. Offer red flowers (especially red hibiscus or lotus).
- Light a 5-wick ghee diya. Burn dhoop (sandalwood preferred).
- Offer bhog: kheer made with milk + sugar + dry fruits, fruits, panchamrit. Mahabhog: keep one whole coconut and break it before Narasimha during puja.
- Read the Hiranyakashipu-Prahlad katha aloud (from previous section). Children should sit with you.
- Chant Narasimha Kavacha Stotram (powerful protection mantra — see next section).
- Conclude with Narasimha aarti: 'Jai Jagdish Hare' or the special Narasimha aarti.
Step 5 — Symbolic Coconut Breaking: This is unique to Narasimha Jayanti. Just as Narasimha emerged from the broken pillar, breaking a coconut before His idol invokes the same protective force into your home. Smear the coconut with kumkum, place it before Narasimha, take His permission, then break it with a single sharp strike. Distribute pieces as prasad.
Step 6 — Charity (highly recommended): Donate til (sesame), red cloth, gold/copper, kheer, brown sugar (gur), or sponsor a meal at a temple. Charity made on Narasimha Jayanti destroys 7 generations of bad karma.
Step 7 — Parana (5:30 AM, May 12): Bathe, do morning Narasimha aarti, take prasad first, then break the fast with a satvik meal (no onion/garlic, no leftover food).
Narasimha Mantras for Protection, Victory & Removing Fear
Narasimha mantras are the most powerful protection mantras in Sanatan Dharma. Begin with intention — 'I chant for protection of [name/family/house/work] from all visible and invisible enemies.'
1. Narasimha Maha Mantra (most important — chant 108x daily on jayanti) ॐ उग्रं वीरं महाविष्णुं ज्वलन्तं सर्वतोमुखम्। नृसिंहं भीषणं भद्रं मृत्युर्मृत्युं नमाम्यहम्॥ Om Ugram Veeram Mahavishnum Jvalantam Sarvatomukham, Nrisimham Bhishanam Bhadram Mrityur-Mrityum Namamyaham. → Salutations to the fierce, valiant, all-powerful Mahavishnu — the death of death itself.
2. Narasimha Beej Mantra (for sudden danger) ॐ क्षौं नमः Om Kshraum Namah → The single-syllable Beej mantra. Chant 108 times when you sense danger. The Sanskrit phoneme 'Kshraum' itself contains the roar of Narasimha.
3. Narasimha Gayatri Mantra ॐ वज्रनखाय विद्महे तीक्ष्णदंष्ट्राय धीमहि। तन्नो नृसिंहः प्रचोदयात्॥ Om Vajra-Nakhaaya Vidmahe, Teekshna-Damstraaya Dhimahi, Tanno Nrisimhah Prachodayat → Awakens warrior consciousness. Best for those facing legal battles, injustice, or workplace bullying.
4. Narasimha 32-Akshara Mantra (for serious threats) → Recite when there is fear of black magic, repeated bad luck, or when someone is targeting you spiritually. Chant minimum 11 times.
5. Narasimha Kavacha Beej (for daily wear protection) → The full Narasimha Kavacha. Many devotees write this on a small paper and wear it in a copper locket.
🎧 All 5 mantras with Sanskrit + Hindi + English meaning + Vedic chanting are available on the Vandnaa App. Begin Narasimha Jayanti at 4:30 AM with the Beej mantra played on loop.
What to Do & What to Avoid on Narasimha Jayanti
✅ Definitely DO:
- Wake before sunrise (Brahma muhurat 4:30 AM)
- Observe complete silence for at least 1 hour during mantra jap
- Recite the full Hiranyakashipu-Prahlad katha to children — this is one of the few festivals scripture-mandates as 'a children's festival' for raising fearless devotees
- Wear red, yellow, or saffron — Narasimha's colours
- Break a coconut before His idol during sandhya puja (the symbolic pillar)
- Donate to brahmin, especially red cloth + sweets + brown sugar
- Light a continuous-burning ghee diya from sunrise to next sunrise (24 hours)
- Visit a Narasimha temple if one is nearby — Ahobilam (AP), Simhachalam (Vizag), Yadagirigutta (Telangana) are major Narasimha shrines
❌ Strictly AVOID:
- No grains, salt, onion, garlic, masoor, brinjal, tamarind
- No anger, no harsh words — even at incompetent staff or rude strangers (this is the hardest discipline of Narasimha vrat — controlling your own ugra rasa)
- No haircut, nails, shaving
- No black or grey clothes
- Do not visit cremation grounds or attend funerals
- Do not start a lawsuit or pick a fight (the energy of the day amplifies whatever you start — start protection prayers, not battles)
- No leftover food, no street food, no garlic-cooked food brought from outside
Special tip for those facing court cases / enemies: Light a til-oil (sesame oil) diya before Narasimha at sandhya kaal and chant Narasimha Beej mantra 'Om Kshraum Namah' 1008 times. This single ritual is documented in Skanda Purana to turn the most hostile situation in your favour.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to chant the fierce Narasimha mantras at home?+
Yes, completely safe — and in fact highly auspicious. The 'fierceness' of Narasimha is His protection towards devotees, not a threat to you. The energy generated by Narasimha mantras creates a protective shield around the home. Always begin with a small Lakshmi-Narasimha (calm form) puja before chanting fierce mantras — this balances the energy. Pregnant women may chant 'Om Kshraum Namah' but should avoid the long 32-akshara mantra.
Why must Narasimha puja be done at sandhya (twilight) and not in morning?+
Because Hiranyakashipu's boon explicitly excluded death by day or night — sandhya is the threshold time, neither day nor night. Narasimha appeared at this exact time. Performing puja at the same threshold time replicates the cosmic moment when Narasimha was born, multiplying the energy. Morning Narasimha puja is supplementary, not a substitute. Even if you cannot do morning puja, never skip the sandhya puja on Jayanti.
Is it true that Narasimha protects against black magic and nazar?+
Yes — Narasimha is considered the supreme deity for protection against all forms of negative energy: black magic (jadu-tona), evil eye (nazar/drishti), tantric attacks, and even nightmares. The Narasimha Kavacha mantra is recited daily by people in high-stakes professions (police, judges, surgeons, politicians) for this reason. For continuous protection, write the Beej mantra 'Om Kshraum Namah' on a small paper, place it in a copper locket, and wear daily after washing in Ganga jal.
Can I do Narasimha vrat without going to a temple?+
Yes — most Narasimha Jayanti vratas are observed at home. You only need a clean puja space, a Narasimha photo or idol, and the items listed in the puja vidhi. Visiting a Narasimha temple adds extra punya but is not mandatory. If no Narasimha temple is nearby, visit any Vishnu/Krishna temple in the evening instead.
What is the connection between Narasimha Jayanti and Holika Dahan?+
Both festivals come from the same Prahlad story. Holika (Hiranyakashipu's sister) tried to burn Prahlad and herself burned to death — that night is Holika Dahan. Two months later, Narasimha emerged from the pillar to kill Hiranyakashipu — that twilight is Narasimha Jayanti. So Holika Dahan celebrates the protection of devotee from fire, and Narasimha Jayanti celebrates the destruction of the asura himself. Together they form Prahlad's complete story arc.
