Who Is Panchmukhi Hanuman?
Panchmukhi Hanuman is the majestic five-faced (panch-mukhi) form of Lord Hanuman. In this form he carries the faces of five great deities at once - Hanuman (facing east), Narasimha (facing south), Garuda (facing west), Varaha (facing north) and Hayagriva (facing the sky/upward).

The Story Behind the Five Faces
During the war in the Ramayana, the demon Ahiravana, a master of dark magic and brother of Ravana, abducted Lord Rama and Lakshmana and carried them to Patala (the netherworld). He planned to sacrifice them before his deity.
Hanuman went to rescue them and learned that Ahiravana could only be killed by extinguishing five lamps placed in five different directions at the very same moment. To do this, Hanuman assumed the Panchmukhi form, with five faces looking in five directions, and blew out all five lamps together - destroying Ahiravana and freeing Rama and Lakshmana.
Thus the five-faced form is forever linked with the rescue of the Lord and the defeat of dark forces through the union of many divine powers in one.
The Meaning of Each Face
Each of the five faces carries the power of a great deity and a direction:
1. Hanuman (east) - the original face of devotion, courage and selfless service to Rama. It removes obstacles and grants strength. 2. This face removes the effect of poisons, black magic and harmful influences. 4. Varaha (north) - the boar avatar of Vishnu who lifted the Earth. This face grants prosperity, well-being and victory over hardship. 5. Hayagriva (upward/sky) - the horse-faced form associated with knowledge and the Vedas. This face grants wisdom, learning and good intellect.

- Day: Tuesday and Saturday are most dear to Hanuman.
- Puja: Light a ghee or til (sesame) oil lamp, offer red flowers, sindoor and a chola of sindoor, and bananas or laddoo as bhog.
- Path: Recite the Hanuman Chalisa, Bajrang Baan or the Panchmukhi Hanuman Kavach with devotion.
