Ganesh Mandals: The Community Tradition Behind Public Ganeshotsav

The mandal system traces its roots back to the community vision behind public Ganesh Chaturthi, when Lokmanya Tilak encouraged neighbourhoods to organise shared celebrations rather than keeping the festival within individual homes. What began with a handful of community groups in Pune has, over more than a century, multiplied into thousands of mandals across Maharashtra and in Maharashtrian communities across India and abroad.

During the festival itself, volunteers take on round-the-clock responsibilities, managing the flow of devotees, coordinating aarti timings, and often running cultural competitions, performances and community meals that turn the pandal into a genuine neighbourhood gathering point.

Today's mandal landscape is remarkably varied. Alongside famous, large-scale mandals known nationally, thousands of smaller lane and society mandals continue the tradition in a quieter, equally devoted way, each with its own character shaped by the community it belongs to.

This variety is, in many ways, the mandal tradition's greatest strength, ensuring that public Ganeshotsav remains accessible and meaningful at every scale, from a modest gathering of a few families to a celebration drawing crowds from across the country.
