Raksha Bandhan 2026 Date, Bhadra & Shubh Muhurat

Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on Shravan Purnima (full-moon day of Sawan). In 2026, this is Sunday, 9 August 2026.

The most important rule: Rakhi must NEVER be tied during Bhadra Kaal. In 2026, Bhadra ends in the early hours of August 9 itself, so the entire day from sunrise onwards is auspicious.

Shubh Muhurat for tying Rakhi (9 August 2026 — approximate):

    • Best time: 5:48 AM – 1:24 PM (entire morning)
    • Aparahna Muhurat (afternoon): 1:30 PM – 4:08 PM
    • Pradosh Muhurat (evening): 6:48 PM – 9:00 PM

Always confirm exact local timings with your city's panchang.

Why Bhadra is forbidden: Bhadra is Surya's daughter and Shani's sister. Raavan's sister Surpanakha tied rakhi to him during Bhadra — leading to his destruction. Tying rakhi in Bhadra brings the same misfortune to the brother.

    Step-by-Step Raksha Bandhan Puja Vidhi

Step 1 (sister's preparation): Bathe and wear new traditional clothes. Prepare a thali with: a diya (ghee), roli/kumkum, akshat (rice + turmeric), chandan, raw rice, sweets (mithai), the rakhi, and a small gift.

Step 2 (brother's preparation): Bathe, wear clean clothes (avoid black). Sit facing east or north on a wooden plank or asana — never directly on the floor.

Step 3: Sister places a coconut and the rakhi in the thali, lights the diya, and does aarti (3 clockwise rotations) of the brother.

Step 4: Apply tilak — first roli/kumkum on forehead, then akshat. The grain of rice should stick to the tilak (sign of long life).

Step 5: Tie the rakhi on the brother's RIGHT wrist while chanting the rakhi mantra (below). Tie three knots — first for the brother's life, second for his prosperity, third for his strength.

Step 6: Brother offers the gift, touches sister's feet (if she is elder) or gives blessing (if she is younger), and feeds her sweet first.

Step 7: Both bow to the family elders together.

Sacred Rakhi-Tying Mantras (Tie Rakhi While Chanting)

    1. Original Raksha Sutra Mantra (most powerful — chant while tying): 'Yena Baddho Bali Raja Daanavendro Mahabalah / Tena Twam Anubadhnami Rakshe Maa Chala Maa Chala.'

Meaning: By the same thread with which the great asura king Bali was bound by Devi Lakshmi, I bind you, O rakhi — do not waver, do not waver. (This was the original protection thread tied to King Bali by Maa Lakshmi to free Lord Vishnu.)

    2. Modern protection mantra (chant 3 times): 'Om Trayambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam.'

    3. Brother's protection chant (he repeats silently while rakhi is tied): 'Om Sarva Mangala Mangalye, Shive Sarvartha Sadhike / Sharanye Trayambake Gauri, Narayani Namostute.'

    4. After tying, sister blesses with: 'Aayushman Bhava, Yashasvi Bhava, Sukhi Bhava, Vijayi Bhava' (May you have long life, fame, happiness, and victory).

Raksha Bandhan Dos & Don'ts You Must Know

    ✅ DO:

    • Tie rakhi only on the right wrist of the brother
    • Make exactly 3 knots — never one or two
    • Use rakhi with red, yellow or saffron threads (most auspicious)
    • Wear the rakhi for at least 21 days, ideally till Diwali, then immerse in flowing water
    • Tie raksha sutra (mauli) on yourself too — left wrist for women, right for men

    ❌ DON'T:

    • Never tie rakhi during Bhadra Kaal — even if late, wait
    • Never use a black, broken, or torn rakhi
    • Never throw an old rakhi in the dustbin — always immerse in river, pond, or under a peepal tree
    • Never tie rakhi during eclipse, sutak, or in mourning period (within 13 days of a death in family)
    • Never argue with siblings on this day — even old grudges should be forgiven
    • Don't fast forcefully — the day is meant for joy, not austerity

The Deep History and Mythology of Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan is ancient — far older than it appears. Its origins span multiple mythological traditions and historical eras:

Story 1 — Indra and Shachi (Bhavishya Purana): When Indra was losing the war against the Asuras, Sachi (his wife) tied a protective thread on his wrist, chanting mantras. Indra won. This is considered the first Raksha Bandhan — a thread tied not just by a sister but by any loved one for protection.

Story 2 — Draupadi and Krishna: When Krishna's finger was cut during the Sishupal incident, Draupadi tore a piece of her sari and tied it on his wound. Krishna considered this a rakhi — and protected Draupadi at every moment of crisis, most famously during the vastraharan in the Mahabharata.

Story 3 — Rani Karnavati and Emperor Humayun: In 1535, Rani Karnavati of Chittor sent a rakhi to Mughal Emperor Humayun when her kingdom was threatened by Bahadur Shah. Humayun, moved by the bond of rakhi, immediately marched to her defense — though he arrived too late. This historical incident cemented Raksha Bandhan as a symbol of brotherhood beyond blood.

Story 4 — Vaman and King Bali: When Vishnu as Vaman took everything from the generous King Bali, Lakshmi Devi tied a rakhi to Bali and asked for the return of Vishnu as a gift. Bali's generosity in releasing Vishnu makes this the story of how a gift given in love returns multifold.

What the word means: Raksha (protection) + Bandhan (bond/tie). It is not merely a festival — it is the formalization of a vow. When a sister ties the rakhi and a brother accepts, both are entering a sacred contract recognized across the cosmos.

Raksha Bandhan for the Modern Family: Sisters, Brothers, and Beyond

Raksha Bandhan has evolved in the modern era — and that evolution is faithful to its original spirit:

Sisters without brothers: Can tie rakhi to cousins, close male friends, elderly men they respect, or even to Lord Ganesha or Shiva (temple rakhi). The protection sought is real regardless of the relationship.

Brothers without sisters: Can receive rakhi from cousins, female friends, mother, or female mentor figures. A rakhi without a biological sister is not incomplete — it is expansive.

    Rakhi across distance (NRI families):

    • Send the rakhi by courier 10 days early; arrange a video call at the muhurat time
    • The sister chants the rakhi mantras during the video call as the brother holds the rakhi near his wrist
    • The brother sends the rakhi gift digitally (payment, gift card, or experience gift)
    • This is now widely accepted as spiritually valid

Self-protection rakhi: Women can tie a rakhi on their own wrist while chanting 'रक्षा सूत्र मन्त्र' — this is called Atmaraksha and is documented in Bhavishya Purana.

Rakhi for trees and animals: In several parts of India (Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttarakhand), rakhis are tied to trees — especially peepal, banyan, and tulsi — as a pledge to protect nature. This practice, called 'Vriksha Raksha Bandhan', is gaining popularity and is historically documented.

What makes a perfect rakhi gift:

    • Something the brother can use in his sadhana: a Rudraksha mala, puja supplies, a book
    • Something practical that he actually needs
    • The tradition says 'whatever he needs most' — not 'whatever is most expensive'

Raksha Bandhan 2026: Friday, 28 August 2026. Aparahna Muhurat (best time): 1:30 PM – 5:30 PM.

Rakhi Tying Mantras and Complete Vidhi — Word by Word

Most sisters tie the rakhi without knowing the mantras — and they still work because intention is primary. But with the mantras, the bond becomes a genuine Vedic raksha kavach:

Step 1 — Aarti: Sister performs aarti of brother with a diya, moving it 7 times clockwise.

Step 2 — Tilak: Apply kumkum (red) or roli tilak on brother's forehead. Use ring finger of right hand.

Step 3 — Akshata: Sprinkle rice grains on his head. This represents Lakshmi's blessing entering his life.

    Step 4 — Tying the Rakhi: Hold the rakhi in right hand. While tying, chant: 'येन बद्धो बली राजा दानवेन्द्रो महाबलः। तेन त्वामभिबध्नामि रक्षे मा चल मा चल॥'

Meaning: 'With that same thread by which the mighty King Bali — lord of the demons — was bound, I bind you, O Raksha. Stay firm, stay firm.'

Tie on the brother's right wrist, tight enough to hold but not painful. Tie 3 knots (each knot = one of the three divine powers invoked).

Step 5 — Sweets: Feed a sweet (mithai) to the brother with your right hand before he eats it himself.

Step 6 — Brother's Raksha Vow: Brother places his hand on sister's head or shoulder and says: 'Behen, main aapki raksha ke liye sadaiv taiyaar hoon.' (Sister, I am always ready to protect you.)

The brother's gift: Tradition says the gift must be given freely, based on the sister's need — not as a transaction. Even ₹11 given with full love is more powerful than ₹10,000 given as an obligation.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can a sister tie rakhi to her brother over a video call or send by post?+

Yes — when distance prevents in-person tying, post the rakhi in advance so it reaches before the festival. On the day, do video call during shubh muhurat, brother ties it himself while sister chants the mantra and does virtual aarti. The protection bond is created by intent, not physical proximity. Lord Krishna himself accepted Draupadi's torn saree as rakhi from a distance.

Can a married woman tie rakhi to her husband or only to brothers?+

Rakhi is traditionally tied only to a brother (real, cousin, or symbolic). The bond between husband and wife is a different sacred relationship — a wife should NOT tie rakhi to her husband. However, she may tie raksha sutra (mauli) on her husband's right wrist with the same rakhi mantra — this is a marital protection thread, not a sister's rakhi.

Can I tie rakhi to a brother who has passed away?+

Yes — this is a beautiful and recommended practice. Place the rakhi on the brother's photo or in front of a small Shri Yantra/Lord Krishna idol, light a ghee diya, offer his favourite sweet, and chant the rakhi mantra. The protection bond reaches the soul directly. Then immerse the rakhi in flowing water within 7 days. Donate a meal in his name on this day.
