Saraswati's Life Lessons - Knowledge & Humility

Saraswati holds a veena, and a well-tuned veena makes sweet music only when its strings are balanced - neither too tight nor too loose. This teaches that knowledge should create harmony in the mind, the heart and our relationships, not noise or conflict.

Lessons for life:

• Tune your mind and emotions like a fine instrument - balanced, not strained.
• Use learning to bring peace and beauty, not to argue or show off.
• A life in harmony is itself the finest music.

Saraswati is dressed in spotless white and seated on a white lotus or swan. White is the colour of purity and truth, free of the colours of greed and ego. It teaches that knowledge must be used honestly, for truth and good, never to deceive or harm.

Lessons for life:

• Let your learning stay free of pride, prejudice and selfish motives.
• Use what you know to help and uplift, not to manipulate.
• Pure intention makes knowledge a blessing rather than a danger.

Saraswati's vehicle is the swan (hansa), said to be able to separate milk from water. This is the power of viveka - discrimination - choosing the good from the bad, the essential from the trivial, the true from the false.

Lessons for life:

• Sift wisely through the flood of information around you.
• Keep what is true and useful; let go of gossip, noise and falsehood.
• Wisdom is not knowing everything, but knowing what truly matters.

Saraswati always holds a book in one hand, even though she is knowledge itself. This is a beautiful lesson: the truly wise never stop learning and never assume they know it all. The rosary in another hand shows that learning must be paired with reflection and devotion.

Before study or any learning, sit quietly, keep your books clean and respected, and chant 'Om Aim Saraswatyai Namah' eleven or 108 times to settle the mind. End by silently resolving to use what you learn for truth and good, and to remain a humble student. On Vasant Panchami and Thursdays, offer white or yellow flowers to the goddess.
