Sawan Somwar 2026: Dates, Vrat Vidhi, Shiv Mantras & Why Mondays in Sawan Are So Powerful
Sawan 2026 Dates & All 4 Sawan Somwar
Sawan (Shravan) month in 2026 begins Friday, 10 July 2026 and ends Sunday, 9 August 2026 (Raksha Bandhan).
The 4 Sawan Somwar in 2026:
- 1st Somwar: 13 July 2026
- 2nd Somwar: 20 July 2026
- 3rd Somwar: 27 July 2026
- 4th Somwar: 3 August 2026
Why Sawan is sacred to Shiva: When the gods churned the ocean (Samudra Manthan), the deadly Halahala poison emerged and threatened all creation. Lord Shiva drank it to save the universe and held it in his throat (becoming Neelkanth — the blue-throated). To cool him down, the gods poured water on him throughout this month. That is why even today, devotees pour water and milk on the Shivling in Sawan — the act of cooling the saviour.
Sawan Somwar Vrat Vidhi (Step-by-Step)
Sankalp (the night before): Take a vow to fast and worship Shiva.
Morning: Wake before sunrise, bathe, wear clean white or saffron clothes (never black).
Abhishek (most important): Visit a Shiv temple OR set up a Shivling at home. Offer in this exact order: 1. Pure water (Gangajal best) 2. Raw milk 3. Curd 4. Honey 5. Ghee 6. Sugar 7. Pure water again
While pouring, chant 'Om Namah Shivaya' continuously.
Then offer: Bilva (bel) leaves — 3-leaf and unbroken — chandan tilak, white flowers (especially aak/datura), bhang or dhatura fruit (optional), white akshat, and dhoop.
Read or hear: Shiv Chalisa, Rudrashtakam, or Mahamrityunjaya stotra.
Vrat food: Only one meal in the evening after Shiv puja — phalahari (sabudana, kuttu, singhara, fruit, milk). No grains, no salt (sendha namak allowed), no onion, no garlic.
Break vrat: Next morning after offering bhog to Shiva and feeding a brahmin or cow.
5 Most Powerful Shiv Mantras for Sawan Somwar
1. Panchakshari Mantra (108 × any number — minimum 1 mala): 'Om Namah Shivaya.' The simplest and most powerful. Chant at least 108 times each Sawan Somwar.
2. Mahamrityunjaya Mantra (108 times — for health & long life): 'Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam / Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat.' Proven to remove fear of disease, accidents, and untimely death.
3. Rudra Gayatri (54 or 108 times): 'Om Tatpurushaya Vidmahe Mahadevaya Dhimahi, Tanno Rudrah Prachodayat.'
4. Shiv Beej Mantra (108 times): 'Om Hreem Shreem Shivaya Namah.' For wealth combined with detachment.
5. Bilva Patra Mantra (while offering each leaf): 'Tridalam, Trigunakaram, Trinetram cha Triyayudham / Trijanma Paap Samharam, Eka Bilvam Shivarpanam.'
7 Things You Must NEVER Do in Sawan
Sawan is tapas (austerity) month. Breaking these increases karma drastically.
1. ❌ No non-veg, eggs, alcohol, onion, garlic — for the entire month, not just Mondays.
2. ❌ No milk drinking by the male head of family — milk belongs to Shiva this month; only offer it. Ladies and children may drink it.
3. ❌ Never offer kewra, ketaki, champa flowers, or coconut water on Shivling — Shiva himself cursed these.
4. ❌ Never break a bilva leaf yourself from the tree on a Monday or Sawan — pluck on Sunday for Monday's puja, or buy from the temple.
5. ❌ No haircuts, shaving, nail-cutting for males during Sawan (especially Mondays).
6. ❌ Do not insult, hit or kill any animal — especially snakes, bulls, dogs (Shiva's vahana family).
7. ❌ Never argue with parents, wife, or guests in Sawan. Negative speech directly displeases Shiva.
Why Sawan is Shiva's Month — The Samudra Manthan Connection
Sawan (Shravan) is the month of Lord Shiva's greatest test — and his greatest gift.
The Samudra Manthan story: When the devas and asuras churned the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan), 14 divine treasures emerged. The 13th was Amrit (nectar of immortality). But the first was Halahal — a poison so potent that a single drop could destroy all of creation.
Neither devas nor asuras could handle it. The universe was on the verge of annihilation. The gods approached Lord Shiva, who alone could absorb it without being destroyed. Without hesitation, Shiva drank the poison — holding it in his throat (neela-kantha, the blue-throated one) to prevent it from spreading.
This happened in the month of Sawan.
To cool Shiva's throat, Goddess Parvati pressed his throat. The moon helped too — this is why Shiva always wears the moon (Chandrashekhara). The Ganges (Ganga) flowing from his matted hair also helped. And the devotees of Shiva began offering water (jalabhishek) to Shivlings to soothe him — a tradition that continues 5,000 years later every Sawan Monday.
What this means for you in Sawan: Every time you pour water on a Shivling this Sawan, you are participating in an act of cosmic gratitude — thanking the one who saved all of creation from destruction, just so you could exist.

Sawan Special Practices: Kanwar Yatra, Green Diet & Shravan Nakshatra
Sawan Somwar vrat is the core — but the entire month of Sawan is filled with spiritually significant practices:
1. Kanwar Yatra: Devotees (Kanwariyas) walk barefoot to the Ganga, collect sacred water (Gangajal) in bamboo pots (kanwars) on their shoulders, and carry it to their local Shiva temple for jalabhishek. They must not let the kanwar touch the ground — it must be handed from shoulder to shoulder.
Nearest Kanwar pilgrimage points from major cities:
- Delhi/NCR: Haridwar (210 km), Sultanganj (Bihar) for Baidyanath
- Mumbai: Trimbakeshwar (165 km from Nashik)
- Kolkata: Tarakeswar (57 km)
2. Sawan Green Diet: In Sawan, many devotees avoid leafy green vegetables (saag, spinach, etc.) because this is the season when insects are most abundant inside these leaves. Traditional reasoning: ahimsa — avoiding accidental killing of microscopic life during this sacred month.
What to eat: Milk, curd, fruits, sabudana (tapioca), samak rice, potatoes, roots. This doubles as an excellent detox period.
3. Pradosh Vrat in Sawan: Every 13th tithi (trayodashi) of each paksha is Pradosh Vrat. In Sawan 2026 — July 24 (Shukla Pradosh) and August 7 (Krishna Pradosh). Visiting a Shiva temple at the Pradosh Kaal (1.5 hours before and after sunset) on these days is considered 1,000× more effective than on a regular day.
4. Teej and Nag Panchami: Both fall within Sawan 2026:
- Hartalika Teej: August 7, 2026
- Naag Panchami: August 9, 2026
For women, Hartalika Teej is the biggest vrat of the month — fasted for the longevity and well-being of the husband, with Goddess Parvati's story at the center.

Sawan Somwar Vrat: Complete Fasting Rules and What to Eat
Whether you are doing the vrat for the first time or have been doing it for years, these rules ensure your vrat is spiritually valid and physically sustainable:
Starting the vrat:
- Begin on the FIRST Sawan Somwar of the year. In 2026: July 13
- Take a formal sankalp (intention): 'I will observe Sawan Somwar vrat for all 4 Mondays of Sawan 2026 — July 13, 20, 27, August 3 — for the blessings of Lord Shiva'
- Continue all 4 Mondays without break. Breaking midway requires a prayaschitta (remedial puja)
Fasting rules:
- Wake up before sunrise, bathe, and wear white or light blue
- The main vrat food is taken only once — at sunset, after temple visit
- Acceptable foods (Sawan vrat thali): sama rice (samak), sabudana khichdi, milk products, fruits, water chestnut (singhara) flour rotis, potatoes, ginger, rock salt
- NOT allowed: wheat, rice, lentils, onion, garlic, leafy vegetables, non-veg, alcohol
- Water and milk are allowed throughout the day
The 5-step Monday puja: 1. Visit Shiva temple in brahma muhurat or early morning 2. Offer raw milk + Gangajal jalabhishek on Shivling while chanting OM NAMAH SHIVAYA 108 times 3. Offer bilva (bel) leaves — the most sacred Shiva offering. Always in odd numbers (1, 3, 5, 11, 21) 4. Light a ghee or sesame diya 5. Perform Shiva aarti and return home for prasad
What if you can't fast: Even visiting a Shiva temple and doing jalabhishek with 108 repetitions of Om Namah Shivaya — without fasting — gives significant Sawan benefit. The intention matters more than the form.
Sawan Somwar Vrat Katha: Read or listen to the Sawan Somwar Vrat Katha (the story of a merchant who offered water to a Shivling unknowingly and was blessed with all material and spiritual prosperity) on each Monday.
🙏 Vandnaa App has the complete Sawan Somwar Vrat Katha in Hindi audio — set the Monday alarm and listen while preparing for puja.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can unmarried girls keep Sawan Somwar vrat? What benefit dothey get?+
Yes — Sawan Somwar vrat is most strongly recommended for unmarried girls seeking a Shiv-like husband. Maa Parvati herself kept this vrat for 108 years to obtain Lord Shiva. Even one Sawan with all 4 vrats removes manglik dosh, late-marriage delays, and brings a virtuous, loving life partner.
I have BP/sugar and cannot fast fully. What should I do?+
Shiva is Bhole Bhandari — the easiest deity to please. Health comes first. Take only one phalahari meal in the morning, drink milk and water through the day, and do mental japa of 'Om Namah Shivaya' as much as possible. Visit a Shiv temple in the evening and offer just water + bilva leaves. This is fully accepted.
What is Kanwar Yatra and is it necessary in Sawan?+
Kanwar Yatra is a pilgrimage where devotees (Kanwariyas) carry holy Ganga water on bamboo poles from Haridwar/Gangotri to their local Shiv temple and offer it on Shivratri (last Sawan Monday). It is NOT mandatory. A simple home abhishek with regular water and full devotion gives the same merit as Kanwar — Shiva looks at bhav, not distance.
