Who Is Shani Dev?
Shani Dev (Shanaishchara) is the planetary deity of Saturn, the son of Surya (the Sun) and Chhaya. Among the Navagraha he is the lord of karma, justice and discipline - the strict but fair judge who gives each soul the exact fruit of its own actions.
Shani is often feared because of Sade Sati (the seven-and-a-half year transit of Saturn) and Shani Dhaiya, periods of testing and slow progress. But his true nature is not cruel. He removes ego, teaches patience and rewards honest effort. Worshipping him with the right mantra, on Saturdays, is believed to ease his trials and turn his gaze from punishment to grace.

Shani Vedic Mantra: Om Nilanjana Samabhasam Raviputram Yamagrajam Chhaya Martanda Sambhutam Tam Namami Shanaishcharam ॐ नीलांजन समाभासं रविपुत्रं यमाग्रजम्। छायामार्तण्ड संभूतं तं नमामि शनैश्चरम्॥ Meaning: I bow to Shani, dark blue like collyrium, son of the Sun, elder brother of Yama, born of Chhaya and the Sun. This is the classic Shani Stotra opening verse.
