Sharad Navratri 2026: 9 Days Colors, Puja Vidhi, Vrat Rules & Kanya Pujan Guide
Why Sharad Navratri Is the Most Powerful Shakti Festival

Four Navratris exist in a Hindu year. The most important — Sharad Navratri — falls in October-November, when the moon is waxing, the nights are cool, and the earth itself becomes receptive to Shakti's energy.
The origin story: A demon named Mahishasur received a boon — no man or god could kill him. Growing arrogant, he conquered the three worlds and expelled Indra. The gods combined their powers and created Durga — she emerged from a flame, mounted on a lion, with ten arms carrying Shiva's trident, Vishnu's chakra, Indra's vajra, and every god's weapon. For nine days and nine nights, she battled Mahishasur. On the tenth day — Vijayadashami (Dussehra) — she killed him.
That nine-night war is what every Hindu devotee commemorates as Navratri. Each of the nine nights, Durga took a different form to fight Mahishasur's different illusions. These are the Nav Durga — nine forms worshipped on nine specific days.

Ghatsthapana Vidhi + 9-Day Vrat Rules + Kanya Pujan
Ghatsthapana (Day 1 morning) — Setting the Sacred Pot: Clean the north-east corner of the home. Place a red cloth on a wooden chowki. Keep a small mitti (earthen) pot filled with soil. Sow 7 varieties of whole grains (barley/jau, wheat, chana, moong, urad, masoor, rice) in the soil and sprinkle water — these are the jawara (sacred sprouts).
Place a brass/copper kalash beside, filled with Gangajal-mixed water. Tie red mauli around the kalash neck. Drop a coin, a betel nut, and a clove inside. Place 5 mango leaves on the opening. Top with a coconut wrapped in red cloth.
Install the Durga photo/idol behind. Light an akhand deep (continuous oil diya) — it must burn for all 9 days non-stop. Chant: 'ॐ ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं चामुण्डायै विच्चे॥'
108 jap daily. The jawara pot is watered twice daily and on Ashtami/Navami, those sprouts are distributed as prasad.
9-Day Vrat Rules:
- No onion, garlic, non-veg, alcohol for all 9 days (even if you don't fast)
- Vrati (one fasting) eats only once a day — phalahari food (fruits, potato, kuttu, singhara, rock salt)
- Wake before sunrise, bath, then puja and mantra
- Do not cut hair, nails, or shave
- No physical intimacy
- Do not sleep on a bed — many vratis sleep on floor mats
- Wear the day's color
- Read Durga Saptashati (at least 1 chapter daily)
Kanya Pujan (Ashtami/Navami): The most important ritual of Navratri. Invite 9 small girls (age 2-10) representing the 9 Durgas + one boy (langura — representing Bhairav).
Wash their feet with water. Apply kumkum tilak. Tie red mauli on their wrist. Offer new clothes, a red chunni, and small gifts (cash/toys).
Serve them the traditional meal: Puri + Chana Sabzi + Sooji Halwa. This is Durga's favourite. After eating, they touch your feet and bless you.
The belief: whatever you ask Durga during Navratri becomes real only after a proper Kanya Pujan. Skipping it makes the 9-day vrat incomplete.
Dussehra Day (Vijayadashami): Worship your tools (shastra puja) — laptop, car, musical instrument, books. Visit a shami tree, pluck a leaf, and exchange as Dussehra greetings. Burn a symbolic Ravan effigy. Drive the car in a new direction (Disha Vijay).
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep Navratri vrat without the strict 9-day rules?+
Yes. Traditional options include: (a) 2-day vrat — only first and last day (Pratipada and Navami); (b) 3-day vrat — first 3 days; (c) alternate day vrat; (d) only one meal per day phalahari for 9 days. Each form is valid. The shastra says shraddha matters more than the number of days. Kanya Pujan on Ashtami or Navami is the one non-negotiable ritual — try to do that even if you cannot fast.
Which day is more important — Ashtami or Navami Kanya Pujan?+
Both are valid — the choice is family tradition. North India generally prefers Ashtami (Mahagauri). Maharashtra, Bengal and South India prefer Navami (Siddhidatri). The Durga Saptashati itself gives both as equally auspicious. Pick whichever matches your family's tradition. Some devout homes do it on BOTH days — Ashtami for marriage/career wishes, Navami for siddhi/moksha wishes.
What if I cannot find 9 small girls for Kanya Pujan?+
Minimum requirement is 2 kanyas (even 1 is accepted in emergencies). Cities often have apartments where this is difficult. You can invite fewer kanyas, or visit a nearby temple or orphanage to feed the girls there as part of Kanya Pujan. Many residential societies organise group Kanya Pujan — contribute to that. Donating food + clothes + cash to underprivileged girls on Ashtami/Navami earns the same punya.
