• A coconut, to be broken as part of the ritual
• Lemons, typically four, tied beneath the vehicle or strung with green chillies to ward off the evil eye
• Kumkum, haldi and chandan for tilak on the vehicle
• A garland of fresh flowers for the vehicle
• A mango leaf toran, if decorating the vehicle further

1. Clean the vehicle thoroughly, inside and out, before beginning the puja.

2. Place or fix the Ganesha idol or sticker on the dashboard.

3. Apply kumkum and haldi tilak on the bonnet, the number plate, the headlights and the wheels.

4. Tie the moli thread to the mirror or handle, and tie the lemons beneath the vehicle or at the front.

5. Decorate the vehicle with the flower garland and toran.

6. Perform aarti by moving a lit diya and camphor in a circular motion around the vehicle.

7. Break the coconut in front of the vehicle, taking care to do this safely at a slight distance from the wheels and from any bystanders.

8. Offer sweets as prasad and distribute them to family members present.

9. Many families prefer to drive the vehicle first to a temple, as a way of formally beginning its journeys with a visit to the divine.

Vijayadashami, the day marking the culmination of Navratri, is one of the most widely favoured days for buying and worshipping a new vehicle, as it is traditionally considered auspicious for new beginnings and new tools of any kind. Other commonly chosen occasions include Akshaya Tritiya, Diwali, and days considered favourable under Guru Pushya or Ravi Pushya Nakshatra combinations.

Many families simply perform the puja on the day of delivery itself, in the morning if possible, while avoiding the daily Rahu Kaal window. When the delivery date cannot be changed, a short puja on that day followed by a more elaborate one on the next suitable occasion is a common and accepted approach. As always, consulting a family priest or panchang can help in choosing a specific date with confidence.

• Skipping the cleaning step and going straight to the puja; a clean vehicle is considered part of the offering itself.

• Breaking the coconut carelessly close to people, glass or the vehicle's paint, risking injury or damage.

• Leaving wax, flower or coconut residue on the vehicle for days afterward instead of clearing it once the puja is complete.

• Fixing the Ganesha idol in a spot that blocks the driver's view or becomes a distraction while driving.

• Treating the puja as a one-time substitute for safe driving habits, seatbelt use, or regular vehicle maintenance, none of which the ritual is meant to replace.

• Forgetting to offer a small prayer before every long journey afterward, even briefly, which many families treat as an extension of the original puja's intent.

Vahan Puja is a quiet acknowledgment that every journey carries some uncertainty, and that safe travel is both a matter of care and of grace. The ritual is less about the vehicle itself and more about the wellbeing of everyone who will ever sit inside it.

Many families keep the practice of chanting Om Gam Ganapataye Namah softly before starting the vehicle on any significant trip, carrying the spirit of that first puja into every journey that follows.
