    Vighnahar: The Remover of Obstacles

On the banks of the Kukadi river in the town of Ozar, near Junnar in Pune district, stands the Vighnahar Temple, also known as Vighneshwar, the seventh shrine of the Ashtavinayak Yatra. The name combines vighna, meaning obstacle, and har or hara, meaning remover, together naming Ganesha as the one who clears obstacles from a devotee's path.

The temple is notable for its idol's eyes and forehead, said to be adorned with precious stones, and for a copper-gilded dome added to the shrine's structure by later devotees as an offering.

    The Legend of Vighnasura

Tradition tells of a demon named Vighnasura who was born to disrupt the sacred rituals and yajnas of sages, causing vighna, obstacles, wherever he went. Troubled sages appealed to Ganesha for protection, and he confronted and defeated the demon.

Spared his life after pleading for mercy, Vighnasura is said to have asked that his own name be remembered in connection with obstacles. Ganesha granted a related boon instead, that he himself would be invoked as Vighnahar before any undertaking, so that obstacles would be cleared at the very outset, provided the demon would not trouble any place where Ganesha was worshipped first.

    Significance for Devotees

This legend is often cited as the very origin of the widespread Hindu custom of invoking Ganesha before beginning any auspicious task, whether a wedding, a new venture, or a religious ceremony, since he is understood here as the deity who clears the way for what follows.

Devotees at Ozar seek not only the removal of existing difficulties but blessings for future undertakings to proceed smoothly, making this temple a favoured stop before major life decisions.

Darshan Guide and How to Reach

Ozar lies near Junnar town in Pune district, not far from Lenyadri, and the two shrines are commonly visited together on the same leg of the yatra given their proximity. The temple maintains a daily darshan schedule with aarti at customary hours.

Roads connect Ozar comfortably to Pune, and pilgrims travelling the full Ashtavinayak circuit typically cover both Lenyadri and Vighnahar within the same day.

    Mantra and a Devotee's Takeaway

At Vighnahar, devotees chant Om Vighnaharaya Namah along with Om Gan Ganpataye Namah, invoking the very quality of obstacle removal that gives the temple its name.

The legend here is a reminder that obstacles are not always meant to be feared but understood, and that beginning any task with humility and remembrance of the divine often clears more than force ever could.
