The Ekadashi That Frees You from Curses

Among 24 Ekadashis in a Hindu year, Yogini Ekadashi has a unique reputation — it is the one vrat that breaks inherited curses, recurring skin diseases, and past-birth karma blocks.

The Brahma Vaivarta Purana says Yogini Ekadashi vrat gives the punya of feeding 88,000 brahmins for 1000 years — one of the highest punya equivalences in the entire scripture.

Yogini Ekadashi 2026 falls on Sunday, 21 June 2026 — Ashadha Krishna Ekadashi. It comes between Nirjala Ekadashi (the most demanding) and Devshayani Ekadashi (when Vishnu sleeps for 4 months). Its position is no accident — it is the last Ekadashi before Vishnu's cosmic rest, and therefore the last opportunity to clear major karma before Chaturmas begins.

The vrat is named after the Yoginis — the 64 mystic female forms who serve Goddess Durga and have the power to bind or release karmic threads. On this day, they are said to walk the earth invisibly, marking those who observe the vrat for liberation in their next karmic cycle.

🙏 If you've felt 'stuck' for years — the same problem repeating, recurring health issues, money never lasting — Yogini Ekadashi is the vrat scriptures prescribe. Start with the Vandnaa App's Yogini Ekadashi reminder and the Hema Mali katha audio.

The Hema Mali Katha — How One Curse Was Broken by One Fast

Sage Markandeya advising the leprosy-stricken Hema Mali to observe Yogini Ekadashi vrat
One vrat. One night of fasting. The deepest curse broken.

In the city of Alkapuri ruled the great Yaksha king Kubera — the wealthiest being in the universe and the keeper of all earthly treasures. Kubera was a devotee of Lord Shiva and worshipped Him daily with fresh flowers from Mansarovar lake.

His royal gardener was a man named Hema Mali. Every morning before sunrise, Hema Mali would go to Mansarovar, pick the freshest lotus and white flowers, and bring them to Kubera by the daily puja time of 11 AM. Kubera trusted him completely.

Hema Mali had a beautiful wife named Vishalakshi. He was deeply attached to her — too deeply.

One day, Hema Mali went to Mansarovar, collected the flowers, but instead of returning straight to the palace, he returned home first. He spent the morning in private moments with his wife. Time passed. Kubera waited at the puja altar with his Shivling unwashed and unworshipped — for the first time in years, the daily puja did not happen on time.

Kubera, furious that his sacred bond with Lord Shiva had been disrupted because of one man's lust, sent a messenger. The messenger returned with the truth: 'My king, Hema Mali is in his bedroom with his wife.'

Kubera erupted. He summoned Hema Mali and pronounced the most fearsome curse of his life:

'You have made me miss my Shiva-worship for the sake of your bodily pleasure. From this moment, you shall be cast out of Alkapuri, separated from the wife you so loved, and afflicted with white leprosy — your skin shall rot and fall. You shall wander the earth as an untouchable until you die.'

Hema Mali fell down weeping. The curse took effect instantly. His skin began to peel. His wife was forcibly separated from him. He was thrown out of Alkapuri.

For years, Hema Mali wandered the earth — a leper, hungry, thirsty, rejected, in agony. He wished for death but death would not come.

One day he reached the ashram of Sage Markandeya in the Himalayas. The sage had lived for thousands of years and knew Hema Mali's story by his powers of vision. He looked at the leper with compassion.

'Yes, my son,' Markandeya said. 'Your sin was great, but the cure exists. Observe the Yogini Ekadashi vrat with full vidhi — once. Just once. Eat nothing on Ashadha Krishna Ekadashi, do Vishnu puja, chant His name, and donate to the needy. Your curse will break.'

Hema Mali, with all his strength, observed Yogini Ekadashi exactly as instructed. He fasted nirjala, chanted 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya' all day, and slept in a temple courtyard.

The next morning at parana, he saw his hands. The skin was healing. By the time he returned to Alkapuri, his body was fully restored. Kubera, seeing him whole, asked how. When Hema Mali narrated the Yogini Ekadashi vrat, Kubera himself became its devotee and proclaimed it across the universe.

From that day, Yogini Ekadashi is observed as the vrat that — with one fast — breaks the deepest curse and heals the deepest illness.

    Step-by-Step Yogini Ekadashi Vrat Vidhi

Day Before (Dashami — June 20): Eat a single satvik meal before sunset. No grains after sunset. Take a bath, sweep your puja room, place fresh flowers and a new diya. Tell yourself the sankalp before sleeping — this primes your mind.

Step 1 — Snan & Sankalp (5:00 AM, June 21): Bathe before sunrise. Add a few drops of Ganga jal if available. Wear clean yellow or white clothes. Sit in your puja room facing east. Hold water + akshat + tulsi leaf in right hand and say:

'I, [name], on this Ashadha Krishna Ekadashi, take this Yogini Ekadashi vrat for the destruction of all curses, diseases, and karmic blocks of this and all past lives. Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya.'

Pour the water on the floor of the mandir.

Step 2 — Vishnu Puja: Bathe Vishnu's idol/photo with milk + Ganga jal. Apply yellow chandan tilak. Offer yellow flowers, tulsi leaves, fruits, panchamrit. Light a ghee diya. Today specifically, place 64 small akshat heaps (or 8x8 grid) on a thali in front of Vishnu — symbolic offering to the 64 Yoginis.

Step 3 — Hema Mali Katha: Read or listen to the Hema Mali katha (from previous section). This is essential — without katha, the Yogini Ekadashi vrat is incomplete. Tell the story to family members.

Step 4 — Mantra Jap: Chant 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya' on a tulsi mala. Minimum 108 jap. For curse-breaking, do 108 jap of the Yogini Mantra: 'Om Hreem Yoginyai Namah' — 11 malas (1188 jap) is ideal.

Step 5 — Phalahar/Nirjal (whole day): No grains, salt (only sendha), onion, garlic, masoor. Permitted: water, milk, fruits, sabudana, makhana. Remain awake. Avoid all argument and harsh speech.

Step 6 — Special 'Cleansing' Ritual at Noon: Take a copper or steel plate. Place a small amount of clean water + 1 spoon of Ganga jal + 7 tulsi leaves + a pinch of haldi. Stir with right index finger while chanting 'Om Hreem Yoginyai Namah' 21 times. Then sprinkle this water on yourself (head + shoulders + heart). This 'micro-snan' actively releases negative karmic threads. Many devotees report visible relief in chronic skin conditions after this single ritual.

Step 7 — Evening Aarti & Bhajan: At sunset (before 6:42 PM when Ekadashi tithi ends), light a 5-wick ghee diya. Sing Vishnu aarti. Stay awake till midnight chanting Hari kirtan if possible.

Step 8 — Parana (Monday morning, June 22): Bathe at sunrise. Worship Vishnu. Eat first the bhog (yellow rice + kheer + tulsi). Donate food/clothes/coins to a brahmin or needy person before eating yourself. Parana window: 5:24 AM – 8:13 AM.

Charity (highly recommended): Donate clothes to a person with skin disease, food to a leper colony, medicines, or sponsor treatment for someone with chronic illness. Yogini Ekadashi daan to the sick destroys the karma of inherited family illnesses.

5 Mantras to Chant on Yogini Ekadashi for Curse Removal

    1. Vishnu Mool Mantra (108x morning, 108x evening) ॐ नमो भगवते वासुदेवाय Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya → The 12-syllable mantra. Removes the karma of 7 lifetimes.

    2. Yogini Beej Mantra (special to today — chant 1188 times if possible) ॐ ह्रीं योगिन्यै नमः Om Hreem Yoginyai Namah → Invokes the 64 Yoginis to release karmic threads. Best for breaking inherited family curses, recurring patterns, blocked relationships.

    3. Vishnu Sahasranama opening (for any chronic illness) शुक्लाम्बरधरं विष्णुं शशिवर्णं चतुर्भुजम्। प्रसन्नवदनं ध्यायेत् सर्वविघ्नोपशान्तये॥ Shuklambaradharam Vishnum Shashivarnam Chaturbhujam, Prasannavadanam Dhyayet Sarva-vighnopashantaye. → Removes all obstacles, including illness obstacles. Recite 21 times.

    4. Markandeya Mahamrityunjaya (for curse-breaking) ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम्। उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान् मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात्॥ Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam, Urvaarukamiva Bandhanaan, Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritaat. → The Mahamrityunjaya mantra given by Sage Markandeya himself — the same sage who guided Hema Mali. Powerful for curse-breaking and life-preservation. Chant 108 times after the Vishnu mantra.

Highly recommended for those who feel 'something is blocking everything I try'.

7 Specific Benefits Recorded in Brahma Vaivarta Purana

    1. Equal to feeding 88,000 brahmins for 1000 years. The exact phrase from Brahma Vaivarta Purana: '88,000 brahmin bhojan ka punya, ek Yogini Ekadashi vrat se prapya.'

    2. Frees from inherited curses. Hema Mali received Kubera's curse — strongest in scripture. Yogini Ekadashi broke it. By logical extension, any inherited curse pattern (seven generations of unmarried daughters, repeating financial losses across generations, recurring tragic deaths in family) can be cleansed.

    3. Cures chronic skin diseases. Hema Mali had white leprosy. The vrat healed him fully. Many devotees with eczema, psoriasis, vitiligo, recurring acne, mysterious rashes report significant relief after observing 3-7 consecutive Yogini Ekadashis.

    4. Destroys karma of past births. Falling in the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) of Ashadha — the cosmic month closest to Pitru Paksha — Yogini Ekadashi has unique power over karma carried forward from past lives.

    5. Removes 'stuck' patterns. People who feel they have been doing everything right but nothing moves — career stalled, relationship not progressing, health not improving despite treatment — find sudden movement after Yogini Ekadashi.

    6. Last opportunity before Vishnu sleeps. The next Ekadashi (Devshayani, July 16) marks Vishnu going into 4-month sleep. After that, Vishnu is less responsive to mundane prayers. Yogini Ekadashi is the last 'window' to clear major karma before this cosmic pause.

    7. Activates Yogini blessings. The 64 Yoginis are usually inaccessible to ordinary devotees. On Yogini Ekadashi alone, they are active and hearing. A sincere request made today is recorded in their cosmic ledger.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can someone with active skin disease do Yogini Ekadashi nirjala vrat?+

Yes — but listen to your body. Skin diseases benefit from increased water intake (which helps detoxification), so phalahar with adequate water (lots of cucumber, watermelon, coconut water) is actually MORE effective than nirjala for healing. Don't skip the noon cleansing ritual (water + Ganga jal + tulsi + haldi sprinkle). Combine the vrat with twice-daily oil massage in the affected areas using sesame oil mixed with a few tulsi leaves. Many devotees report the strongest healing comes from this combined approach, not from extreme fasting.

Is it okay to do Yogini Ekadashi for just one wish (e.g., curse breaking) or do I need consistent practice?+

Hema Mali was cured by ONE Yogini Ekadashi vrat. Scripture is clear that this single vrat, observed with full vidhi and sincere bhaav, is enough for curse-breaking. However, for chronic conditions (long-term illnesses, generational patterns), 7 consecutive Yogini Ekadashis (across 7 years) is the prescribed cycle. After that, the practice can become annual maintenance. Don't underestimate one — it changed Hema Mali's life. Don't overestimate seven — it should be sustainable for you.

What is the difference between Yogini Ekadashi and Devshayani Ekadashi?+

Yogini Ekadashi (Krishna Paksha — June 21) is for ACTIVE karma cleansing — destroying past sins, breaking curses, removing obstacles. Devshayani Ekadashi (Shukla Paksha — July 16) is for PASSIVE devotion — beginning Chaturmas where Vishnu sleeps and devotees focus on inner spiritual practice rather than worldly action. Yogini = remove past blocks. Devshayani = begin inner journey. Most devotees observe both — Yogini to clear, Devshayani to deepen. They are bookends of the same 25-day cosmic transformation period.

Do I need to specifically pray to all 64 Yoginis, or is general Vishnu puja enough?+

Vishnu puja is the primary requirement — Yogini Ekadashi is fundamentally a Vishnu vrat. The 64 Yoginis are honored symbolically through the akshat-grid (8x8) offering on your puja thali. There is no need to chant all 64 names. Chanting the single Yogini Beej mantra 'Om Hreem Yoginyai Namah' 108 times collectively addresses them. If you want to go deeper, the 64 Yogini temples in Khajuraho, Hirapur (Odisha), Mitaoli (MP), and Ranipur Jharial (Odisha) are the only physical sites where one can directly worship them — visiting on Yogini Ekadashi is considered the ultimate vrat.

If I can't fast at all due to medical reasons, can I still receive Yogini Ekadashi benefits?+

Yes — absolutely. The Padma Purana states that for those medically unable to fast, the punya can be earned by: (1) reading or listening to the Hema Mali katha thrice on the day, (2) chanting Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya 1008 times (about 90 minutes), (3) feeding at least 7 needy people one full meal, (4) eating only satvik food (no onion/garlic/grain) on the day, (5) donating yellow clothes and water to brahmins. Doing all 5 substitutes earns equivalent punya. God measures bhaav, not technique. Pregnant women, diabetics, the elderly, and the sick should NOT do nirjala — they should do this 5-action substitution instead.
