Ashtalakshmi Stotram: 8 Forms of Lakshmi - Meaning & Benefits

Why Eight? The Architecture of Abundance

When devotees pray for 'wealth', they actually want eight different things simultaneously and don't realise it. They want money - but also grain on the table, healthy children, victory in life-situations, learning that opens doors, power to influence, courage to fight, and the underlying source-energy that holds all these together. The Vedic tradition recognises this complexity and presents Lakshmi as Ashtalakshmi - eight forms each governing one specific dimension of abundance.

The eight forms in their traditional order are: Adi Lakshmi (the primordial, the source), Dhana Lakshmi (money and gold), Dhanya Lakshmi (grain and food), Gaja Lakshmi (royal power and authority), Santana Lakshmi (children and progeny), Veera Lakshmi (valour and courage), Vijaya Lakshmi (victory in endeavours), Vidya Lakshmi (knowledge and wisdom).

The Ashtalakshmi Stotram, composed in praise of all eight, is the most complete Lakshmi prayer. Unlike single-form prayers that may bless one area while another suffers (a man may have money but lose his children's love; another may have learning but no money), Ashtalakshmi worship balances all eight, ensuring abundance does not become lopsided. This is why traditional families prefer this stotra over isolated mantras - it asks for completeness, not one item.

Each form has a specific day of the week when she responds most powerfully:

    • Adi Lakshmi - Sunday
    • Dhana Lakshmi - Monday
    • Dhanya Lakshmi - Tuesday
    • Gaja Lakshmi - Wednesday
    • Santana Lakshmi - Thursday
    • Veera Lakshmi - Friday morning
    • Vijaya Lakshmi - Friday evening
    • Vidya Lakshmi - Saturday

A committed devotee dedicates each day to the corresponding form during a 40-day cycle, completing all eight 5 times each. This is the prescribed 'Ashtalakshmi Vrat' that, when done with sincerity, has been reported to transform entire family situations within a single cycle.

Adi, Dhana, Dhanya, Gaja - The Foundation Four

    1. ADI LAKSHMI - The Primordial Mother Verse: Sumanasa-vandita Sundari Madhavi Chandra-sahodari Hema-maye / Munigana-vandita Mokshapradayini Manjula-bhashini Vedanute 'Praised by gods, beautiful one, consort of Madhava, sister of Moon, golden-formed, praised by sages, giver of liberation, sweet-spoken, hymned by Vedas.'

Adi Lakshmi is the source. From her, all other seven forms emerge. She holds two lotuses and shows abhaya-mudra (fearlessness gesture). She is the only form depicted alone with Vishnu (the others are shown with attributes). Pray to her when you don't know which specific form you need - Adi sends you to the right Lakshmi.

Best day: Sunday. Offer: red lotus, akshat, kheer. Specific benefit: clarity about which area of life needs attention first.

    2. DHANA LAKSHMI - Money and Gold Verse: Dimi-dimi-dimi-dimi-dindhima dhwani / Dundubhi-naada-supurnamaye / Ghana-ghana-ghana-ghana-ghanitatga-shabdita / Veda-vimaargya-vibhushita / Jaya jaya he Madhusudhana-kaamini Dhanalakshmi paalaya maam 'O Dhanalakshmi resounding with the drum-beat Dimi-Dimi-Dindhima, filled with the trumpet-Dundubhi sound, bedecked with bells, sought through the Vedas - Beloved of Madhusudana, victory to you, please protect me!'

Dhana Lakshmi grants liquid wealth - currency, bank balance, business income, investment returns. She holds the gold-pot and a small mongoose (in Tibetan-Hindu fusion). Worship her when actual cash flow is the issue.

Best day: Monday. Offer: gold (even a small ornament), yellow flowers, panchamrit, mishri. Specific benefit: pending payments released, salary hikes, profitable deals appearing.

    3. DHANYA LAKSHMI - Grain and Food Abundance Verse: Aayi khalu khalu vidhuta-kara-tale / Manjula-kanchana-kalashe / Hara-hara-hara-hara-haradana / Halayudha-priye / Jaya jaya he Madhusudhana-kaamini Dhanyalakshmi paalaya maam 'O Dhanyalakshmi who shakes her bell-anklets, golden-pot bearer, beloved of Halayudha (Balarama, who bears the plough), banisher of all sin - victory to you!'

Dhanya is grain and agricultural produce. She holds sheaves of paddy. Worship her for: food never running out at home, farmland productivity, blessings on cooked food. Particularly important for farming families and for households with young children who need consistent nutrition.

Best day: Tuesday. Offer: rice, wheat, jowar, ragi (any grain), green vegetables, jaggery. Specific benefit: end of grain-shortage, fertile farms, healthy eating habits in children.

    4. GAJA LAKSHMI - Royal Power, Vehicles, Real Estate Verse: Jaya jaya durgati-naashini Kamini / Sarva-phalaprada-shastra-maye / Ratha-gaja-turaga-padaati-samaavruta / Parijana-mandita lokanute / Jaya jaya he Madhusudhana-kaamini Gajalakshmi rupena paalaya maam 'Victory to her who destroys misfortune, beloved one, giver of all fruits, surrounded by chariots, elephants, horses and infantry, attended by retinue - Gajalakshmi, protect me!'

Gaja means elephant - Gaja Lakshmi is shown flanked by two white elephants pouring water on her. She rules over royal authority, vehicles (cars, real estate, anything that 'carries' you), and government dealings. Worship her for property purchases, vehicle blessings, civil service exams, dealings with authorities.

Best day: Wednesday. Offer: betel leaves, areca nut, yellow cloth, sweets containing milk. Specific benefit: property dealings closing favorably, vehicle blessings, government approvals.

Santana, Veera, Vijaya, Vidya - The Higher Four

    5. SANTANA LAKSHMI - Children and Progeny Verse: Ayikha-ga-vahini Mohini Chakrini / Raaga-vivardhini Jnana-maye / Guna-gana-varidhi Lokahitaishini / Saptasvara-bhushita Gaana-nute / Jaya jaya he Madhusudhana-kaamini Santanalakshmi paalaya maam 'O bird-vehicled, enchanting, discus-bearing, increaser of devotion, knowledge-formed, ocean of virtues, well-wisher of worlds, adorned with the seven musical notes - Santanalakshmi, protect me!'

Santana Lakshmi grants children, healthy progeny, and good relationships with one's children. She holds an infant in her arms in most depictions. Worship her for: conception, healthy pregnancy, child's well-being, repairing a broken relationship with a son or daughter, blessing of grandchildren.

Best day: Thursday. Offer: yellow flowers, banana, gud-chana, milk-based sweets. Specific benefit: pregnancy news within 90-180 days, healing of parent-child conflicts, IVF success, healthy delivery.

    6. VEERA LAKSHMI - Courage and Valour Verse: Jaya-vara-varnini Vaishnavi Bhargavi / Mantra-svarupini Mantra-maye / Sura-gana-pujita-shighra-phalaprada / Jnana-vikasini Shastra-nute / Jaya jaya he Madhusudhana-kaamini Veeralakshmi paalaya maam 'Victory-granting, fair-complexioned, Vaishnavi, Bhargavi, mantra-formed, of mantra-nature, worshipped by gods, swift-fruit-giver, knowledge-spreader, hymned by scriptures - Veera Lakshmi, protect me!'

Veera is the form of Lakshmi as warrior. She rides a lion (some depictions show her on an elephant). Worship her when you need to confront a difficult situation: a court case, an oppressive boss, an unfair family member, an addiction you cannot break alone, a fear holding you back.

Best day: Friday morning. Offer: red flowers, weapon-shaped sweets, kumkum-tilak. Specific benefit: courage to act, end of paralysis-by-fear, sudden ability to confront what you have been avoiding.

    7. VIJAYA LAKSHMI - Victory in Endeavours Verse: Jaya-kamala-asini Sad-gati-dayini / Jnana-vikasini Gaanamaye / Anudina-marchita Kunkuma-dhusara / Bhushita Vasudha narayane / Jaya jaya he Madhusudhana-kaamini Vijayalakshmi paalaya maam 'Victorious one seated on the lotus, giver of good states, knowledge-revealer, music-formed, daily-worshipped, kumkum-anointed, adorned, earth-protector Narayani - Vijaya Lakshmi, protect me!'

Vijaya Lakshmi crowns efforts with success. She is the form invoked before launching anything - a new business, a competitive exam, a wedding negotiation, a court case, a political campaign. She does not give you the win without effort; she ensures effort converts into victory.

Best day: Friday evening. Offer: yellow turmeric, victory-colored cloth (red or saffron), one item that represents the project you want to succeed (a business card, an admit card, etc.). Specific benefit: completion of long-pending projects, exam success, court verdict in your favor, deal closures.

    8. VIDYA LAKSHMI - Knowledge and Wisdom Verse: Pranata-sura-vara-bhargavi Bhumitra / Phalaprada-kalpa-druma-roopini / Vaak-mati-tushti-sthiti-mati-pradayini / Praaninaam Vidyaadayini Jaya jaya he Madhusudhana-kaamini Vidyalakshmi paalaya maam 'Salutations to her of the surrendered gods' lineage, friend of the earth, fruit-granting wish-tree, giver of speech, intellect, contentment and stability, giver of knowledge to all beings - Vidya Lakshmi, protect me!'

Vidya Lakshmi grants higher learning, retention, articulate speech, scholarly achievement and wisdom-discrimination. She holds palm-leaf manuscripts. Worship her for: school and college admissions, research grants, retention during exams, public-speaking ability, becoming someone whose opinion others seek.

Best day: Saturday. Offer: white flowers, books, pens, mishri, milk. Specific benefit: admission to top institutions, exam ranking, becoming the 'wise one' in your family or organisation.

The Ashtalakshmi Stotram's beauty is that all eight verses together take just 8-9 minutes to recite. Doing the complete stotra once daily covers every angle of life simultaneously - most balanced and powerful Lakshmi sadhana available to a householder.

The 40-Day Ashtalakshmi Cycle - Complete Vidhi

The Ashtalakshmi Vrat is observed for 40 consecutive days, beginning ideally on a Friday during shukla paksha. Each day, the full 8-verse stotra is recited, but with extra focus on the day-specific form (e.g., Sunday emphasises Adi Lakshmi, Monday Dhana Lakshmi, etc.).

    Daily routine (1 hour total):

    Step 1 - Setup (5 minutes):

    • Bathe and wear clean clothes (color according to the day's form - yellow on Monday for Dhana, white on Saturday for Vidya, red on Friday for Veera/Vijaya).
    • Wipe the puja area, light a ghee diya, and burn good-quality incense (sandalwood, rose, or jasmine).
    • Place Lakshmi-Ganesh photo, an Ashtalakshmi yantra if available, and 8 small heaps of rice for the 8 forms.

Step 2 - Sankalpa (2 minutes): Sit facing east. Take water in right hand, state name + gotra + date + 'I am beginning the Ashtalakshmi 40-day vrat with the sankalpa of [specific wish, e.g., business growth, child, etc.] and seek the goddess's grace.'

Step 3 - Stotra recitation (10 minutes): Recite the full 8-verse Ashtalakshmi Stotram clearly. On the day-specific form's verse, pause briefly and place a flower or offering at that heap of rice.

    Step 4 - Day-specific japa (15 minutes): Chant the day's form's mantra 108 times using a tulsi or kamal-gatta mala. Day-specific mantras:

    • Sunday (Adi): Om Sri Adilakshmyai Namah
    • Monday (Dhana): Om Sri Dhanalakshmyai Namah
    • Tuesday (Dhanya): Om Sri Dhanyalakshmyai Namah
    • Wednesday (Gaja): Om Sri Gajalakshmyai Namah
    • Thursday (Santana): Om Sri Santanalakshmyai Namah
    • Friday morning (Veera): Om Sri Veeralakshmyai Namah
    • Friday evening (Vijaya): Om Sri Vijayalakshmyai Namah
    • Saturday (Vidya): Om Sri Vidyalakshmyai Namah

Step 5 - Offering (5 minutes): Offer the day-specific item (jaggery and grain on Tuesday for Dhanya, books on Saturday for Vidya, etc.). Light camphor and circumambulate the puja platform 8 times - once for each form.

Step 6 - Concluding aarti (5 minutes): Sing the Mahalakshmi aarti 'Om Jai Lakshmi Mata' once. Distribute prasad to family.

Step 7 - Charity (10 minutes): This is non-negotiable. Each day, donate or do charity matching the day's form. Monday - give Rs 10 to a needy person (Dhana). Tuesday - give grain to a temple or animal (Dhanya). Thursday - give yellow sweets to a pregnant woman (Santana). Friday - donate red cloth (Veera/Vijaya). Saturday - donate stationery to a poor student (Vidya). Without this charity, the vrat is incomplete - Lakshmi only multiplies what is shared.

Day 40 (udyapan): Feed 8 women, 8 brahmins, or 8 hungry strangers a full meal. Distribute prasad widely. The 8 most-impacted family members each light a diya at the puja place. The vrat is now complete.

    Common result timeline:

    • Days 1-7: Subtle peace, less anxiety, sense of being held.
    • Days 8-21: Small unexpected gains - refunds, gifts, opportunities.
    • Days 22-35: One major breakthrough in the most-needed area.
    • Days 36-40: Multiple smaller blessings cluster together.

Families that complete this vrat sincerely report that the result outlasts the 40 days by years - the 'channel' opened during the vrat keeps flowing.

    Frequently Asked Questions

If I can do only one form, which Lakshmi should I choose?+

Always start with Adi Lakshmi - she is the source, and worshipping her brings clarity about which specific form your life most needs. After 21 days of Adi Lakshmi alone, the right secondary form becomes obvious. If you face an immediate, urgent issue (no money in account, court case tomorrow, child's exam this week), skip directly to the relevant form: Dhana for money, Vijaya for court/exam, Veera for confrontation, Santana for child. For long-term comprehensive blessings, the full Ashtalakshmi Stotram once a day is the most balanced approach.

I am a male householder - is Ashtalakshmi vrat only for women?+

Open to all genders. The vrat is especially common among married couples doing it together - wife handles puja, husband handles charity. Single men, particularly businessmen and professionals, do it solo for career-and-money blessings. The only gender-specific tradition is the udyapan: women feed 8 suhagan women, men feed 8 brahmins or any 8 hungry people. Lakshmi is the universal mother; she does not discriminate.

Is Ashtalakshmi the same as Mahalakshmi?+

Mahalakshmi is the supreme form of Lakshmi - the principal goddess. Ashtalakshmi are her 8 functional emanations. Think of it as: Mahalakshmi is the full sun; Ashtalakshmi are her 8 rays. Worshipping Mahalakshmi gives blanket blessings; worshipping Ashtalakshmi gives targeted blessings to specific areas. Both are valid; the Ashtalakshmi approach is preferred for householders with specific needs, while Mahalakshmi worship suits saints, sanyasis and those seeking general spiritual elevation.

What if I do not see results in the 40-day cycle?+

Three checks: (1) Did you do daily charity? If skipped, Lakshmi cannot multiply - restart with strict charity discipline. (2) Was your sankalpa clear? Vague wishes ('be more prosperous') get vague results; specific wishes ('Rs 50,000 loan paid by July') get specific results. (3) Is your environment Lakshmi-friendly? Clean home, no fighting, no waste, respect to elders, no insulting women in the house. If all three are fine and no results, the karma you are facing may require a longer cycle - repeat the 40 days. Most cases that fail on cycle 1 succeed on cycle 2 or 3. The persistence itself is part of the blessing.
