Why a Shop or Business Opening Puja?

Starting a new shop, office or business is a major step, and Hindu tradition begins it with a Lakshmi-Ganesh puja. Lord Ganesha is invoked first as the remover of obstacles and giver of wisdom, and Goddess Lakshmi as the bestower of wealth, prosperity and abundance.

The puja sets a positive, grateful tone for the venture - asking the divine for honest growth, satisfied customers and steady fortune. Many also honour the account book (bahi-khata), the cash box and Kuber, the lord of treasure, on this day.

Auspicious Muhurat & Items

Auspicious days:

  • Diwali and Dhanteras are the most cherished for new business beginnings.
  • Akshaya Tritiya, Vijayadashami (Dussehra), Gudi Padwa, Navratri and Pushya Nakshatra days are also highly favoured.
  • Most weekdays free of inauspicious yogas can work; a pandit fixes the shubh muhurat from the panchang.

Puja items:

  • Idols or photos of Lakshmi and Ganesha
  • Roli, haldi, akshat, moli (kalava), flowers and a garland
  • A kalash with water, mango leaves and coconut
  • Ghee diya, incense, camphor for aarti
  • Coins, the new account book (bahi-khata), and sweets/prasad
  • A swastika and shubh-labh to draw at the entrance

Step-by-Step Puja Vidhi

1. Clean and decorate the shop; clean yourself and wear fresh clothes. Begin in the chosen muhurat. 2. Establish the deities: Place Ganesha and Lakshmi (Ganesha on the right of Lakshmi from the worshipper's view) on a clean chowki. Set the kalash beside them. 3. Sankalp: Take a vow with water in hand, naming the new business and praying for its success and honest prosperity. 4. Worship Ganesha first: Offer tilak, akshat, flowers, durva grass and modak/laddu; chant 'Om Gan Ganapataye Namah'. 5. Worship Lakshmi: Offer roli, akshat, red flowers, lotus, kheer or sweets; chant 'Om Shreem Hreem Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah'. 6. Honour the bahi-khata and cash box with a swastika and tilak; some write 'Shubh-Labh' and a swastika on the first page. 7. Aarti: Perform Lakshmi-Ganesh aarti with camphor. 8. Open and distribute: Inaugurate the shop, offer prasad to all and welcome the first customers with a warm, grateful heart.

Mantras, Tips & the Right Spirit

Mantras, Tips & the Right Spirit

Helpful mantras:

  • Ganesha: Om Gan Ganapataye Namah / Vakratunda Mahakaya...
  • Lakshmi: Om Shreem Hreem Shreem Mahalakshmyai Namah
  • Reciting Shri Suktam or the Lakshmi aarti adds great auspiciousness.

Tips:

  • Keep the entrance clean and well-lit; draw a swastika and 'Shubh-Labh' near the door.
  • Place the Lakshmi-Ganesh photo on a clean wall facing a good direction.
  • Many keep a small daily puja or diya in the shop thereafter.

The right spirit: True prosperity in tradition is built on honesty and good conduct. The puja is a prayer that growth comes through fair dealing, service to customers and gratitude - not merely profit. Begin with that intention, and the blessing has true meaning.
