Why Families Keep Bappa for Different Numbers of Days
There is no single scriptural rule fixing the length of the Ganpati stay. The count is a kul parampara - a family custom passed down and, in older times, shaped by how much a household could afford to host daily naivedya and aarti. What matters is that the number you choose stays the same every year unless elders formally change it. Breaking the count midway is what tradition discourages, not the count itself.
2026 Visarjan Dates for Each Option
With sthapana on Sunday, 13 September 2026:
- Dedh din (1.5 days) - visarjan on Monday, 14 September, usually in the afternoon or evening. Most common in Maharashtra homes with limited time.
- 3 days - visarjan on Tuesday, 15 September.
- 5 days - visarjan on Thursday, 17 September, a popular middle path.
- 7 days - visarjan on Saturday, 19 September.
- 10 days - visarjan on Anant Chaturdashi, Wednesday 23 September 2026, the grand public farewell.
Gauri-Ganpati households often align visarjan with Jyeshtha Gauri's departure instead.
What Actually Changes With the Count
Daily worship stays identical whichever count you pick: morning and evening aarti, durva and modak naivedya, and the Atharvashirsha or Vakratunda mantra. Only three things scale with the days - the number of naivedya offerings, how long the decoration and lamp are maintained, and the size of the farewell. A 1.5-day Ganpati receives the same complete puja as a 10-day one, simply compressed. Never shorten the count because of inconvenience once the sankalp has been taken.
Choosing the Count for a First-Time Household
If your family is installing Ganpati for the first time, elders usually advise starting with 1.5 or 5 days. Pick a count you can honour every year, including years with travel, exams or a new baby. Ask your paternal family what they follow - continuing their count is considered auspicious. Decide before sthapana and state the number in your sankalp, because the promise is made at installation, not at visarjan.
