ISKCON Vrindavan: The Story of Krishna-Balaram Mandir

Srila Prabhupada travelled from India to the West later in life, carrying with him the teachings of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition of devotion to Krishna. Out of this mission grew a worldwide movement, and Krishna-Balaram Mandir was established in Vrindavan as a spiritual home base, connecting devotees around the globe back to the very land where Krishna is believed to have walked.

For many foreign-born devotees, this temple is often their first experience of Vrindavan, and it is common to see pilgrims of many nationalities chanting and circumambulating together in its courtyard.

For ISKCON devotees and visiting pilgrims alike, Krishna-Balaram Mandir represents the idea that devotion to Krishna knows no boundary of nationality or background.

The temple follows a structured daily schedule typical of ISKCON temples worldwide, beginning with the Mangala Aarti before sunrise and continuing with several aartis through the day, along with periods when the deities rest behind closed curtains. Devotees are welcome to join the kirtans and aartis, which are open and participatory in nature.

Janmashtami is celebrated here on a grand scale, along with Radhashtami, Gaura Purnima and Prabhupada's disappearance day, each drawing large numbers of devotees and marked by continuous kirtan and festive decoration.

Krishna-Balaram Mandir is located in the Raman Reti area of Vrindavan, well connected by road to the rest of the town and to Mathura, about twelve kilometres away. Mathura Junction is the closest major railway station, with regular trains from Delhi and Agra, while Agra's airport is the nearest by air. The temple also runs its own guesthouse, making it a convenient base for pilgrims visiting other Vrindavan temples as well.

The chant most associated with this temple and the wider ISKCON movement is the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra: Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare, chanted as a simple, direct call to the divine.

Krishna-Balaram Mandir shows how devotion to Krishna, rooted in Vrindavan's soil, can travel across the world and return home again in the hearts of pilgrims from every continent. Worship here, as everywhere, is an act of faith and love, not a transaction.
