Jagdish Temple, Udaipur: The City's Grand Vishnu Shrine

Tradition credits Maharana Jagat Singh I, a ruler of Udaipur's Mewar dynasty, with building this temple in the seventeenth century as a devotional offering to Vishnu. The temple was constructed near the royal palace, reflecting how closely temple building and kingship were connected in Mewar's history, much as it was at Eklingji to the north.

Over the generations, the temple has remained an active place of daily worship rather than a monument frozen in the past, with regular rituals, festivals and community gatherings keeping its sanctity alive in the heart of the city.

Jagdish Temple is built in the Indo-Aryan style typical of Rajasthan's grand temples, rising three storeys with a tall shikhara that can be seen from several points in the old city.
