Kamika Ekadashi falls on the eleventh tithi (Ekadashi) of the Krishna Paksha (waning moon) in the month of Shravana, usually in July or August. It is the first Ekadashi of the holy Chaturmas-Shravana period, when devotion to Lord Vishnu is considered especially powerful. Its name comes from kamana (desire), as the vrat is said to fulfil sincere wishes and grant liberation. The scriptures praise Kamika Ekadashi as a vrat whose merit equals great pilgrimages and yajnas. Devotees believe it washes away accumulated sins, even grave ones, removes fear of death and grants peace to ancestors. Worshipping Lord Vishnu, especially with Tulsi leaves on this day, is said to please him more than countless offerings. The fast is kept for inner purity, fulfilment of righteous desires, good health and ultimately moksha, making it dear to householders and seekers alike.

The katha, narrated by Lord Krishna to Yudhishthira, tells of a brave but hot-tempered Kshatriya who, in a quarrel, accidentally killed a Brahmin. Stricken with guilt, he sought to perform the last rites but was refused, as the sin of Brahma-hatya clung to him. A wise sage advised him to observe the Kamika Ekadashi vrat and worship Lord Vishnu with full devotion. The man fasted, prayed and offered Tulsi to the Lord. By Vishnu's grace, his terrible sin was washed away and he attained peace - showing the vrat's power to cleanse even the heaviest karma.

The vrat begins at sunrise on Ekadashi and is broken the next morning at parana time. Allowed for those keeping a phalahar (fruit) fast: fruits, milk, water, and vrat foods like sabudana, singhara/kuttu flour, potato and rock salt (sendha namak). Strictly avoided are rice, all grains and lentils, onion, garlic and non-vegetarian food. Many keep a nirjala (waterless) or water-only fast. Avoid anger, lies, gossip and harming others; spend the day in Vishnu bhajan, japa and reading the katha.

1. On Dashami (the day before), eat a simple satvik meal and resolve (sankalp) to keep the fast. 2. On Ekadashi, rise early, bathe and wear clean clothes. 3. Set up Lord Vishnu's idol or image; light a ghee lamp and incense. 4. Offer Tulsi leaves, yellow flowers, fruits, panchamrit and sweets; Tulsi is essential to Vishnu worship. 5. Chant Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya and read the Kamika Ekadashi katha. 6. Perform Vishnu aarti morning and evening, and stay awake (jagran) singing bhajans through the night if possible. 7. Next morning (Dwadashi), worship again, feed and donate to a Brahmin or the needy, then break the fast at parana time.

On Kamika Ekadashi, offering Tulsi (holy basil) leaves to Lord Vishnu is considered supremely auspicious - the scriptures say even a single Tulsi leaf offered with love pleases him more than gold or jewels. Pluck the leaves with respect before sunset (never on Ekadashi itself in some traditions; gather them on Dashami), and never chew them. Lighting a lamp before the Tulsi plant and circumambulating it adds to the merit of the vrat.
