Best Direction for the Main Door

In Vastu Shastra, the main door (mukhya dwar) is the mouth of the home (mukh) through which energy enters, so its direction matters greatly.

  • Most auspicious: North, east and north-east facing entrances are considered the best, inviting positive energy, prosperity and the morning sun.
  • Acceptable with care: West and certain segments of the south, if other Vastu measures are observed.
  • The door should be the largest and most attractive door in the house, opening clockwise into the home, and should open fully without obstruction.

If changing the direction of an existing door is not possible, simple remedies like keeping the entrance clean, well-lit and welcoming are believed to help.

What to Place at the Entrance

A welcoming, auspicious entrance is said to draw positive energy and Lakshmi into the home:

  • Toran / bandanwar: Hang a fresh toran of mango leaves and marigold, or an auspicious door-hanging, over the main door.
  • Rangoli: A simple rangoli or swastika and shubh-labh at the threshold is traditional and welcoming.
  • Nameplate: A clean, clear nameplate is considered auspicious for the home's identity.
  • Light: Keep the entrance well-lit; a lamp or bright light near the door is very auspicious.
  • Ganesha / auspicious symbol: Many place an image of Lord Ganesha or Om / swastika near the entrance for an auspicious start.
  • Plants: Healthy green plants like tulsi (nearby) or a money plant add positive energy; avoid thorny or dried plants at the door.

The Threshold (Dehleez)

The threshold, or dehleez, holds special importance in Indian tradition and Vastu:

  • A raised threshold (dehleez) at the main door is traditional - it is said to keep negative energy out and positive energy in, and reminds those entering to pause and step in with respect.
  • Keep the threshold and the area just inside and outside the door spotlessly clean every day.
  • Some families mark the threshold with a small swastika, kumkum or a strip of haldi as a sign of auspiciousness.
  • Do not place footwear, dustbins or shoe racks right on or beside the main entrance; keep them tucked away.
  • The space directly in front of the main door should be clear and open, not blocked by clutter, a wall, or a large pillar.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Common Mistakes to Avoid
  • A dark, dim entrance - poor lighting at the door is one of the most common Vastu faults. Keep it bright.
  • A creaking, squeaking or broken door - keep hinges oiled and the door in good repair; a door that does not open fully blocks energy.
  • Clutter, shoes and dustbins piled at the entrance.
  • A mirror facing the main door directly, which is believed to reflect energy back out.
  • Two doors directly in line (main door straight in line with the back door), as energy is said to rush straight through; soften it with a curtain or plant.
  • Broken nameplate or a dried, dead toran left hanging for a long time.
  • A toilet or shoe rack directly facing the main door from inside.

A clean, bright, welcoming entrance is the simplest and most powerful Vastu practice - it sets a calm, auspicious tone for everyone who enters.
