Seeking the Divine Shield
When we face the ill will of others, the evil eye or negative energy, the devotional path teaches us to seek protection from the divine rather than to retaliate. The fierce forms of the Mother Goddess and of Vishnu stand as guardians who shield the sincere and turn away harm. Protection mantras are chanted not to harm anyone but to surround oneself, one's home and family with a wall of divine grace and fearless calm.
Durga Mantra - The Protective Mother
Maa Durga, in her form as Chamunda, is the fierce protector who destroys negativity and shields her children. Chant:
Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundaye Vichche (ॐ ऐं ह्रीं क्लीं चामुण्डायै विच्चे)
Another powerful protective prayer is:
Sarva Mangala Mangalye Shive Sarvartha Sadhike, Sharanye Tryambake Gauri Narayani Namostute
Deity: Durga. Day: Tuesday, Friday and during Navratri. Count: 108 times. Mala: rudraksha or red sandalwood.
Bagalamukhi Mantra - Stiller of Enmity
Maa Bagalamukhi, one of the ten Mahavidyas, is invoked to still the ill intentions of enemies and to win in disputes and legal matters through righteousness. Her beej mantra is:
Om Hleem Bagalamukhi Sarvadushtanam Vacham Mukham Padam Stambhaya Jihvam Kilaya Buddhim Vinashaya Hleem Om Svaha
A short form is:
Om Hleem Bagalamukhyai Namah (ॐ ह्लीं बगलामुख्यै नमः)
Deity: Bagalamukhi. Day: Tuesday. Count: 108 times. Mala: turmeric (haldi) beads. The colour yellow is dear to her.
Narasimha Mantra - The Fearless Protector
Lord Narasimha, the fierce man-lion avatar of Vishnu, is the supreme protector who appeared to save his devotee Prahlad. He is invoked for safety from evil, black magic and unseen dangers. Chant:
Om Ugram Veeram Maha Vishnum Jvalantam Sarvato Mukham, Nrisimham Bhishanam Bhadram Mrityur Mrityum Namamyaham
A short form is:
Om Kshraum Narasimhaya Namah (ॐ क्ष्रौं नरसिंहाय नमः)
Deity: Narasimha. Day: Saturday and Narasimha Jayanti. Count: 108 times. Mala: tulsi.
Jap Vidhi - How to Chant
1. Bathe and sit on a clean asan, facing east or north, with a pure and humble heart. 2. Light a ghee or sesame oil lamp before the deity and offer red or yellow flowers as suited. 3. Chant the chosen mantra 108 times, holding the wish for protection, never to harm. 4. For Durga, Tuesday and Friday are ideal; for Bagalamukhi, Tuesday with yellow offerings. 5. Visualise a shield of golden light around yourself, your home and family. 6. Close with a prayer for the wellbeing of all, including those who wish you ill. Purity of intent is essential; these mantras protect, they are never for harming others.
Supporting Remedies for Protection
Reciting the Durga Chalisa or Hanuman Chalisa daily, lighting a lamp at home each evening, and keeping a clean pooja space all strengthen a protective atmosphere. Many keep a Hanuman or Durga image at the entrance, perform nazar utaarna with rock salt or red chillies for the evil eye, and tie a black thread to ward off negativity. Above all, honesty, forgiveness and refusing to wish harm on others keep the heart pure, which is the truest protection of all.
Surrender and Be Fearless
True protection comes not from fearing enemies but from surrendering to the divine and standing firm in righteousness. These mantras are meant to calm the heart and place your worries in the hands of the Mother and the Lord, who guard those who take refuge in them. Chant with faith, harm no one, and let go of the urge for revenge; a heart at peace and rooted in dharma is shielded by grace itself.
