Why Fear and Negative Thoughts Take Hold

Fear, worry and repeating negative thoughts are a natural part of life, but when they settle in, they steal sleep, confidence and joy. In the devotional tradition, the mind is calmed not by fighting these thoughts but by filling it with the steady sound of a divine name. Mantra jap gives the restless mind a single point to rest on, replacing fear with faith. The point is not to deny difficulty but to face it with a protected, courageous heart.

Hanuman Mantra - The Remover of Fear

Lord Hanuman is the foremost giver of fearlessness and strength. His very name dissolves fear, ghosts and negativity. Chant:

    Om Han Hanumate Namah (ॐ हं हनुमते नमः)

A simpler and beloved form is:

    Om Shri Hanumate Namah (ॐ श्री हनुमते नमः)

Deity: Hanuman. Day: Tuesday and Saturday. Count: 108 times. Mala: red sandalwood or tulsi. Many devotees also read the Hanuman Chalisa daily, as its verse 'Bhoot pishaach nikat nahi aavai' is famed for removing fear.

Mahamrityunjaya Mantra - Shield of the Mind

The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra of Lord Shiva is one of the most healing mantras, offering protection from fear, illness and untimely danger. Chant:

Deity: Shiva. Day: Monday, or daily at dawn. Count: 11 or 108 times. Mala: rudraksha. It steadies a frightened, anxious mind like a protective shield.

Bhairav Mantra - Guardian Against Negativity

Kaal Bhairav, the fierce form of Shiva, removes fear of the dark, of enemies and of unseen negative forces. Chant after sunset:

    Om Kaal Bhairavaya Namah (ॐ काल भैरवाय नमः)

Deity: Kaal Bhairav. Day: Sunday or Tuesday, after sunset. Count: 108 times. Mala: rudraksha or black beads. Light a mustard or sesame oil lamp while chanting and pray for fearlessness and protection of your home.

Jap Vidhi - How to Chant

    1. Bathe and sit on a clean asan in a quiet corner, facing east or north. 2. Light a lamp or incense before your deity and take a moment to breathe and settle. 3. Choose one mantra that draws you and hold the mala in your right hand. 4. Chant at least 108 times daily, keeping the mind gently on the sound and meaning. 5. After jap, sit silently for two minutes and feel the calm before standing. 6. Practise at the same time each day, ideally at dawn or after sunset for Bhairav. Consistency matters more than perfection; even a few minutes daily slowly steadies the mind.

Supporting Remedies for a Calm Mind

Alongside mantra jap, simple practices deepen the peace: light a ghee lamp at home each evening, keep a clean and uncluttered pooja space, and recite the Hanuman Chalisa before sleep to ward off bad dreams and fear. Wearing or keeping a rudraksha, offering water to the rising sun, and reducing late-night screen time all calm the nervous system. Seva, honest conduct and kindness to others quietly remove the inner unrest that feeds negative thoughts.

    Faith Over Fear

Fear loses its grip the moment the heart remembers it is not alone. Mantra jap is not a magic switch but a daily practice that slowly rebuilds courage from within. Be patient and gentle with yourself, and if fear or anxiety feels heavy, also seek the support of trusted people or a professional. The divine name and sincere effort together carry you toward a steady, fearless heart.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Which mantra is best to remove fear?+

Hanuman's mantra 'Om Han Hanumate Namah' and the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra are widely chanted to remove fear. Choose the one you feel drawn to and chant it 108 times daily with faith.

How long does it take for the mantra to help?+

There is no fixed time, as it depends on faith and regularity. Many devotees feel calmer within a few weeks of daily practice, but the deeper benefit is a steady, patient mind built over time.

Can I chant the mantra at night for bad dreams?+

Yes. Reciting the Hanuman Chalisa or 'Om Han Hanumate Namah' before sleep is a traditional way to ward off bad dreams and fear of the dark and to invite restful sleep.

How many times should I chant the mantra?+

A full mala of 108 times daily is ideal. The Mahamrityunjaya Mantra may also be chanted in a shorter round of 11 times when time is limited, as long as it is done with attention.

Do I need a guru to start chanting these mantras?+

These devotional mantras can be chanted by anyone with faith and a clean heart. A guru's guidance is valued for advanced sadhana, but simple daily jap of Hanuman or Shiva needs only sincerity.

Will mantra jap replace medical help for anxiety?+

No. Mantra jap brings calm and inner strength but is not a substitute for medical care. If fear or anxiety is severe, please combine devotion with the support of a doctor or counsellor.
