Which Deities Give Protection?

In Sanatan Dharma, Lord Hanuman is the most beloved protector - the embodiment of strength, courage and selfless devotion. It is widely believed that wherever Hanuman is remembered, fear, negativity and evil cannot stay. The Hanuman Chalisa itself says that all troubles and pains end by his grace.

Lord Shiva, through the Mahamrityunjaya mantra, is invoked for protection from danger, illness and untimely harm. A kavach (literally 'armour') is a protective stotra that wraps the devotee in divine names, such as the Ram Raksha or the Hanuman kavach. Reciting these is a way to surrender fear and ask for a shield of light - reminding us that true protection comes from faith and a clear conscience.

Mantras for Protection from Negativity

1. Hanuman Beej Mantra ॐ हं हनुमते नमः Om Han Hanumate Namah Meaning: Salutations to Lord Hanuman - chanted for strength, courage and protection from fear.

2. Hanuman Protection Verse (from the Chalisa) भूत पिशाच निकट नहिं आवै, महाबीर जब नाम सुनावै Bhoot Pishaach Nikat Nahin Aavai, Mahabir Jab Naam Sunavai Meaning: No evil spirit can come near when the name of the mighty Hanuman is recited.

3. Mahamrityunjaya Mantra ॐ त्र्यम्बकं यजामहे सुगन्धिं पुष्टिवर्धनम् उर्वारुकमिव बन्धनान् मृत्योर्मुक्षीय मामृतात् Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam, Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat Meaning: We worship the three-eyed Shiva who nourishes all; may he free us from the bondage of death and harm, like a ripe cucumber freed from its vine.

4. Narasimha Protection Mantra ॐ उग्रं वीरं महाविष्णुं ज्वलन्तं सर्वतोमुखम् Om Ugram Viram Maha Vishnum Jvalantam Sarvatomukham Meaning: The opening of the Narasimha kavach, invoking the fierce, all-facing protector Lord Narasimha who destroys evil.

Jaap Vidhi - How to Chant for Protection

1. Best days: Tuesday and Saturday are dear to Hanuman; Monday is for Shiva mantras. Chant in the morning after a bath, or in the evening before a lamp. 2. Seat and lamp: Sit on a clean asan facing east or north. Light a ghee or oil lamp before an image of Hanuman or Shiva. 3. Mala: Use a red or rudraksha mala and chant 108 times (one mala). For deeper sankalp, some do 11 malas on Tuesdays. 4. Recite a kavach: Reciting the Hanuman Chalisa, Ram Raksha Stotram or Bajrang Baan is a complete protective practice. 5. Visualise a shield: As you chant, imagine a warm protective light around you and your home, and mentally offer your fears to the deity. 6. Keep your conduct clean: Protective mantras work best alongside truthfulness and good deeds - a pure heart is the strongest armour.

Benefits of Protective Mantras

Benefits of Protective Mantras
  • Courage over fear: Chanting Hanuman's name is widely believed to drive away fear and fill the heart with strength.
  • A sense of being shielded: Reciting a kavach leaves devotees feeling wrapped in divine protection, easing worry about negativity or the evil eye.
  • Calm in difficult times: The Mahamrityunjaya mantra is turned to for protection during illness, danger or anxious phases of life.
  • A protected home: Many families recite the Hanuman Chalisa daily to keep the home atmosphere positive and peaceful.
