What Is Masik Durgashtami?

Masik Durgashtami is the Ashtami (eighth tithi) of the Shukla Paksha in every lunar month, dedicated to Goddess Durga. While the grandest Durgashtami is during Sharad Navratri (Maha Ashtami), the monthly Ashtami lets devotees honour the Mother Goddess all year round.

The vrat is kept for protection, courage, victory over difficulties and the fulfilment of sincere wishes. Durga, the warrior form of Adi Shakti, removes fear and shields her devotees like a mother.

When Does Masik Durgashtami Come?

Masik Durgashtami comes once every lunar month on the Shukla Paksha Ashtami - twelve times a year. The exact date shifts each month with the tithi, so check your panchang for the Ashtami nearest your puja.

The most important of these is Maha Ashtami / Durga Ashtami during Sharad Navratri (in 2026, around 19 October), when Durga is worshipped with special grandeur.

Masik Durgashtami Puja Vidhi

1. Morning: Bathe early, wear red or clean clothes and take the sankalp to keep the vrat. 2. Puja setup: Place an image of Maa Durga, light a ghee or sesame-oil lamp, and offer red flowers (especially hibiscus), roli, akshat, sindoor and bangles. 3. Bhog: Offer halwa-puri, kheer or fruit; red items and a coconut please the goddess. 4. Mantra jaap: Chant 'Om Dum Durgayai Namah' or recite Durga Chalisa / Durga Saptashati verses. 5. Kanya pujan: Where possible, feed and honour young girls (kanya) as forms of the goddess - the most cherished act of the day. 6. Keep a phalahar fast, do the evening aarti, and break the fast with satvik food.
