    What Is Mangala Gauri Vrat

Mangala Gauri Vrat is a sacred fast dedicated to Maa Gauri, the gentle and auspicious form of Goddess Parvati. It is observed mainly by married women, and also by unmarried girls praying for a good husband. Gauri is the divine consort of Lord Shiva, the ideal of devotion, patience and marital love. By worshipping her on this vrat, devotees seek a long and happy married life, the wellbeing of their husband, and the joy of children.

    When Is It Observed

Mangala Gauri Vrat is observed on every Tuesday of the holy month of Shravan (Sawan), which usually falls in July-August. The name itself joins Mangala (Tuesday, ruled by Mangal) with Gauri. There are typically four or five Tuesdays in Shravan, and the vrat is kept on each of them. Many women begin the vrat in the first year of marriage and continue it for five consecutive years, completing it with a formal udyapan. For the exact Shravan dates each year, confirm the Tuesday tithis on the Vandnaa Panchang.

    Mangala Gauri Vrat Puja Vidhi

Perform the puja in the morning after bathing: 1. Wake early, bathe and wear clean, preferably red or auspicious-coloured clothes. 2. Set up a chowki with a clean red cloth and place an idol or image of Maa Gauri (Parvati) on it. 3. Make a small Gauri form from turmeric or clay if no idol is available, and place it on a plate of rice. 4. Light a ghee lamp and offer roli, akshat, mehndi, kumkum, bangles, bindi and red flowers - the symbols of suhag. 5. Offer sixteen (solah) items of each kind where possible - 16 garlands, 16 fruits, 16 sweets, 16 laddoos. 6. Read the Mangala Gauri Vrat Katha, then perform the aarti. 7. Pray for the long life of your husband and a blessed home, and break the fast with sattvik food after the puja.

    Mangala Gauri Vrat Katha

A well-known katha tells of a wealthy merchant named Dharmapal and his wife who had no child for long. Blessed at last with a son, they learned the boy was fated to a short life. On the advice of a sage, when the boy married a girl who herself faithfully kept the Mangala Gauri Vrat, the merit of her devotion to Maa Gauri protected her husband from untimely death and granted him a long, healthy life. The story teaches that sincere worship of Gauri shields the marriage and turns misfortune into blessing.

    Vrat Rules and Niyam

Observe the fast with cleanliness and devotion. Most women keep a nirjala or fruit-and-milk fast and eat only once after the evening or post-puja, taking sattvik food without grains, onion or garlic. Avoid anger, harsh speech and gossip on the vrat day. Wear the symbols of suhag and keep the puja items reserved only for worship. Donating the puja items or laddoos to a Brahmin or a married woman after the vrat is considered very auspicious.

    Benefits of Mangala Gauri Vrat

This vrat is believed to grant a long and healthy life to the husband, harmony and love in marriage, and protection of the home from misfortune. For unmarried girls, it is said to bless them with a good and caring husband. Devotees also pray through it for the gift of children and the wellbeing of the whole family. Above all, it deepens a woman's bond of faith with Maa Gauri, the very embodiment of an ideal, devoted wife.
