Murudeshwar Temple: The Seaside Shiva Statue of Karnataka

According to tradition, this stretch of Karnataka's coast is connected to the story of the Atmalinga, which Ravana received from Lord Shiva after intense penance, on the condition that it must never touch the ground, lest it root itself there permanently.

The Devas, concerned that Ravana's devotion would grant him great power, sought the help of Lord Ganesha, who appeared before Ravana disguised as a young boy just as Ravana urgently needed to answer a call of nature. Ravana handed the Atmalinga to the boy, asking him to hold it, but only for a short while.

Ganesha, after calling out three times, placed the linga upon the ground when Ravana did not return in time, and it settled there permanently. This region along the coast, including Murudeshwar, is associated by tradition with fragments and echoes of that legend, cherished by devotees as part of the sacred geography of Shiva's presence on this coastline.

The statue of Shiva at Murudeshwar, seated in serene meditation facing the sea, is counted among the tallest Shiva statues in the world, and has become a place many devotees visit specifically for its striking presence.

Beside it stands a tall Rajagopuram, one of the tallest gateway towers of its kind, with a lift for visitors to ascend and take in views of the surrounding coastline and the statue up close.
