Common Questions From Devotees

What is the Navagraha temple at Guwahati?+

A domed shrine on Chitrachal hill in Guwahati holding nine stone lingas, each assigned to one of the nine grahas and draped in the corresponding colour, with a tenth at the centre taken as Shiva in some arrangements. The present structure was built by the Ahom king Rajeswar Singha around 1752, on an older site.

Why is Guwahati called Pragjyotishpura?+

The name is generally parsed as the city, pura, of eastern, prag, light or astronomy, jyotisha, and it has been connected to this hill and its association with the study of the heavens. The name appears in the Mahabharata and the Puranas as the capital of Narakasura and Bhagadatta. Whether there was an actual observatory or school of astronomy there is tradition rather than established fact.

Who are the nine grahas?+

Surya the Sun, Chandra the Moon, Mangala, Budha, Brihaspati who is the guru of the devas, Shukra who is the guru of the asuras, Shani who is Surya's son, and Rahu and Ketu, which are the head and body of an asura severed by Vishnu after he drank the amrita. Rahu and Ketu are shadow entities rather than bodies, corresponding to the two lunar nodes where eclipses occur.

Does Vandnaa offer astrology or predictions?+

No. Vandnaa is a devotional companion and does not offer kundli, birth charts, personal predictions or forecasts. It carries the panchang because the panchang tells you when to observe a fast, when a festival falls and when the day's auspicious hours are, which is a calendrical function. At this temple the nine grahas are objects of worship, in the same way any deity is.

What else can I see in Guwahati?+

Kamakhya on Nilachal hill, the principal temple of the northeast, Umananda on Peacock Island by ferry which also has golden langurs, Sukreswar on the Brahmaputra bank, Basistha ashrama, Ugratara, the Assam State Museum and the Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra. Further out, Hajo, Madan Kamdev, and Pobitora, which has the highest density of one horned rhinoceros of any protected area in the world.

Should I buy expensive remedies for graha problems?+

Be careful. A temple priest performing an ordinary observance for an ordinary dakshina is part of the tradition. Somebody who first frightens you and then sells you the cure is not. Warning signs include a price that rises with your concern, being told to keep the remedy secret, being discouraged from seeking medical or professional help, and escalating demands. Ritual is not a substitute for medical care, legal advice or mental health support, and the tradition itself never claimed it was.
