What Is Panch Dev Worship?

Panch Dev means the 'five deities', and Panchayatana puja is the tradition of worshipping them together on one altar. The five are Vishnu, Shiva, Devi (Shakti), Ganesha and Surya.

This system is widely associated with the great teacher Adi Shankaracharya, who encouraged it to unite devotees of different paths under one harmonious worship. The deity dearest to the worshipper is placed at the centre and the other four around, so a Shaiva, a Vaishnava, a Shakta, a Ganapatya or a Saura can each keep their chosen deity foremost while honouring all five. It teaches that the one divine appears in many loving forms.

The Five Deities and What They Represent

  • Vishnu (विष्णु): The preserver and protector, who sustains dharma and the order of the universe; he gives steadiness, grace and protection.
  • Shiva (शिव): The transformer and the supreme ascetic, who dissolves the old so the new can arise; he gives detachment, inner stillness and the dissolution of ego.
  • Devi / Shakti (देवी / शक्ति): The Mother Goddess, the living power behind all creation; she gives strength, courage, nourishment and grace.
  • Ganesha (गणेश): The remover of obstacles and lord of beginnings; he is invoked first in every rite and gives wisdom and a smooth path.
  • Surya (सूर्य): The sun, the visible divine and source of life and health; he gives vitality, clarity and the energy that drives all action.

How the Five Are Arranged

In classical Panchayatana puja each deity is also honoured through a sacred symbol or stone: a shaligram for Vishnu, a banalinga for Shiva, a swarnamukhi or natural stone for Devi, a red stone for Ganesha and a crystal (surya-kanta) for Surya. Many homes simply use small images or pictures instead.

The chosen deity (ishta) is placed at the centre and the other four at the four corners. For example, in Shiva Panchayatana, Shiva sits at the centre with Vishnu, Devi, Ganesha and Surya around him. There is no rigid rule for a home altar - what matters is that all five are honoured with love. The arrangement is a daily reminder that whichever form we hold dearest, the whole divine surrounds and supports us.

How to Do Daily Panch Dev Puja

How to Do Daily Panch Dev Puja

1. Bathe and purify: Take a bath, wear clean clothes and clean the altar. Sprinkle a little water for purification (achaman). 2. Invoke Ganesha first: Begin every puja with Ganesha so the worship proceeds without obstacles. 3. Light a lamp and incense: Offer a ghee or oil lamp and dhoop to all five deities. 4. Offer to each deity: Give water, flowers, akshat (rice), chandan and naivedya (bhog) to Vishnu, Shiva, Devi, Ganesha and Surya in turn. 5. Chant the mantras: Recite a simple mantra for each - for example Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya (Vishnu), Om Namah Shivaya (Shiva), Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundayai Vichche (Devi), Om Gam Ganapataye Namah (Ganesha) and Om Suryaya Namah (Surya). 6. Offer arghya to Surya: If possible, offer water to the rising sun. 7. Aarti and prasad: Conclude with aarti, a prayer for the welfare of all, and distribute prasad.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who are the Panch Dev?+

The Panch Dev are the five principal deities of Panchayatana worship: Vishnu, Shiva, Devi (Shakti), Ganesha and Surya. Together they let a devotee honour the whole divine in one altar.

Why is Panchayatana puja associated with Adi Shankaracharya?+

Tradition holds that Adi Shankaracharya encouraged Panchayatana puja to harmonise the followers of different deities. By worshipping all five together, devotees of Vishnu, Shiva, Devi, Ganesha and Surya could practise side by side in unity.

Which deity goes in the centre of the altar?+

The deity dearest to the worshipper (the ishta devata) is placed at the centre and the other four around. So a Shiva devotee keeps Shiva at the centre, a Vishnu devotee keeps Vishnu, and so on, while all five are honoured.

Can I do Panch Dev puja at home daily?+

Yes. A simple daily puja with a lamp, water, flowers, a mantra for each deity and aarti is enough. Begin with Ganesha, honour all five with devotion, and offer arghya to the sun if possible. Sincerity matters more than elaborate ritual.
