Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple Varanasi - Significance

The temple is believed to have been founded by Goswami Tulsidas, the saint-poet who wrote the Ramcharitmanas, in the sixteenth century. Tradition holds that Tulsidas had a vision of Hanuman Ji at this very spot, where he was blessed with the darshan of Lord Ram. In gratitude, he established the shrine. The current temple structure was rebuilt in the twentieth century by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, the founder of Banaras Hindu University.

Devotees believe that praying at Sankat Mochan removes all sankat - troubles, fears, illnesses and obstacles - from one's life. The deity here is seen as especially merciful and quick to respond to sincere prayer. A visit to this temple is considered an essential part of a Kashi pilgrimage, often combined with darshan at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. Many believe Hanuman Ji is present here in subtle form, guarding the city of Shiva.

As Tuesday and Saturday are Hanuman's special days, the temple sees its largest crowds then, with long queues of devotees offering sindoor, boondi laddoo and red flowers. On these days the atmosphere is filled with the recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa and the singing of bhajans. Devotees who cannot visit other days often plan their darshan for Tuesday or Saturday, believing prayers offered then are especially fruitful.

Common offerings at the temple include: 1. Sindoor applied to Hanuman Ji and taken as prasad on the forehead. 2. Boondi laddoo and besan sweets as bhog. 3. Red flowers and garlands, especially marigold. 4. Recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa, Bajrang Baan and Sundarkand. 5. Lighting a lamp and offering a chola on special occasions. The temple also hosts the famous Sankat Mochan Sangeet Samaroh, a classical music festival held in Hanuman's honour each year.

The temple is open from early morning until late evening, with the busiest hours on Tuesday and Saturday. It lies in the southern part of Varanasi, close to the Assi Ghat and Banaras Hindu University, easily reached by auto or taxi. Dress modestly, remove footwear before entering, and follow security checks as the temple is well guarded. Combine your visit with nearby Assi Ghat for a morning Ganga aarti and a peaceful start to a Kashi pilgrimage.

Maintain silence and devotion in the queue, and avoid pushing or rushing. Photography is often restricted inside the sanctum, so keep your phone away near the deity. Carry minimal belongings, as bags and some items may not be allowed inside. Offer your prayer with a calm, humble heart - the spirit of Sankat Mochan is faith, not show, and even a quiet recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa is deeply honoured here.
