Bhudevi's marriage to Vishnu is not treated in the tradition as incidental to the Varaha story, a footnote tacked onto a rescue narrative, but as its own theologically significant fact: it establishes a direct, personal, marital bond between the preserver god and the earth itself, meaning every subsequent act of divine protection Vishnu extends to the world carries, within this framework, something of a husband's own obligation toward his wife rather than merely a deity's general benevolence toward creation.

Some traditions distinguish Bhudevi carefully from Lakshmi's more commonly worshipped form, treating the two as related but distinct manifestations, sometimes explaining the difference in temperament attributed to each - Lakshmi associated more with wealth and fortune's shifting nature, Bhudevi with the earth's own patient, steady endurance - as reflecting something of each goddess's own domain.

A third consort, Neela or Nappinnai in some South Indian traditions, particularly associated with Krishna as an avatar of Vishnu and linked to cattle and pastoral life, is sometimes added to complete a trio, though Lakshmi and Bhudevi remain the two most consistently depicted together across Vishnu temple iconography generally.

Bhudevi's worship extends well beyond her specific narrative connection to Varaha: she is invoked broadly whenever the earth itself is treated as sacred and deserving of reverence, in the Bhumi Puja performed before construction begins on a new building, in the daily practice many observant Hindus follow of touching the ground and seeking forgiveness before their feet first press into it each morning, and in agricultural rites asking the earth's own blessing before planting.

In each of these contexts, the underlying theology draws implicitly on this same idea: that the ground is not simply inert material to be used, but a goddess with her own history of having been endangered, rescued, and formally bound in marriage to the very deity charged with the world's preservation.

A reader who has met Varaha's confrontation with Hiranyaksha elsewhere in this series can read this as that story's quieter second half: the rescue was the dramatic part, but the marriage is the part that keeps being invoked, quietly, every time someone bows to the ground before standing on it.
