Karna, raised by the charioteer Adhiratha and his wife Radha after Kunti abandoned him at birth, was rejected as a student by Drona, who taught only kshatriyas of recognised royal birth and turned Karna away because of his adopted family's suta, or charioteer, status, regardless of Karna's obvious talent.
Determined to master the most advanced weapons knowledge available, Karna sought out Parashurama, the warrior-sage and avatar of Vishnu who had once destroyed the kshatriya class in an earlier age and now lived on Mahendra mountain, teaching only Brahmins the highest weapons science, including knowledge of the Brahmastra.
Knowing he would be refused as a suta's son, Karna told Parashurama he was a Brahmin, and was accepted on that claim. He studied under Parashurama for years, gaining exactly the mastery Drona had denied him, all the while carrying a lie about his own identity to the one teacher capable of giving him what he wanted most.
The lie held until an ordinary afternoon undid it. Parashurama, tired, asked to rest with his head in Karna's lap while they were out together, and fell asleep there. While he slept, a wasp, or in some versions a worm, bored into Karna's thigh, causing real pain and drawing blood.
A true kshatriya's endurance training would have taught Karna to bear this without flinching, and that is exactly what he did, sitting perfectly still through the pain rather than risk waking his teacher, letting the insect continue boring into his leg for as long as it took. When Parashurama woke and saw the blood, he understood immediately what the stillness meant: no Brahmin, trained only in study and ritual rather than a warrior's discipline of pain, could have endured that without reacting. The lie was exposed by the very quality, unbreakable endurance under pain, that made Karna the fighter he was.
Parashurama, furious at having been deceived into teaching sacred knowledge to someone who had lied about caste to obtain it, cursed Karna on the spot: that the Brahmastra and the other supreme knowledge Parashurama had given him would fail him and be forgotten at the exact moment he needed it most, in his final, decisive battle.
Karna begged forgiveness, and Parashurama, unable to fully retract a curse once spoken but softened somewhat by Karna's evident remorse and continued devotion, allowed that the forgetting would strike only once, at the single moment it would do the most damage, rather than every time Karna tried to use the weapon.
That moment came at Kurukshetra, in his final fight with Arjuna. As his chariot wheel sank into the ground, a separate curse from a Brahmin whose cow Karna had once accidentally killed, and as he stood exposed, trying to recall the Brahmastra's invocation to turn the fight back in his favour, the knowledge would not come. He stood defenceless at the exact moment two separate curses converged on him at once, unable to fight back the way his training should have let him, unable to recall the one weapon that might have changed the outcome.
The episode sits alongside Karna's other reversals, Indra taking his armor, Kunti's late confession of his true birth, Bhishma limiting his participation in the war's early days, as part of a pattern the epic builds around him specifically: extraordinary ability, matched at every turn by circumstances and old debts closing in from directions he could not control, so that his death, when it finally comes, reads less like a single battlefield defeat and more like the collection of everything that had been quietly owed against him for years.
