Kartavirya Arjuna, king of the Haihaya dynasty ruling from Mahishmati, appears elsewhere in this series in two later episodes: humbling Ravana by capturing him at the Narmada, and provoking Parashurama into the confrontation that eventually ends his own life over the theft of Kamadhenu's calf.

Before either of those events, the Puranas describe him as a devoted disciple of the sage Dattatreya, whose own origin as one of Anasuya's three sons has its own entry in this series, and whose teaching Kartavirya is said to have served with genuine, sustained devotion long before asking anything of him in return.

When Dattatreya, pleased with this service, eventually offered Kartavirya a boon of his choosing, the king's request is recorded with unusual specificity across the versions that preserve it: not simply invincibility, not simply victory in every battle, but a thousand arms, along with strength equal to that of a thousand ordinary warriors, and crucially, the wisdom and self-discipline needed to use that power justly rather than merely wielding it.

Popular memory of Kartavirya today runs almost entirely to the thousand arms themselves, the striking physical image that gives him his other common name, Sahasrarjuna, and that makes him instantly recognisable across Puranic art whenever he appears.

What gets dropped in most retellings is the second half of what he actually asked for: that Dattatreya also grant him righteousness and the capacity for just rule alongside the raw physical power, on the understanding, made explicit in several tellings, that strength without discipline would eventually corrupt whoever held it.

Dattatreya granted both halves of the request, and for the greater part of Kartavirya's long reign the Puranas describe him ruling with genuine justice, remembered in several sources as among the most accomplished and admired kings of his age, his thousand arms serving the second boon rather than overriding it.

The Kamadhenu episode, told separately elsewhere in this series, marks the moment the second half of the original boon failed him: encountering Jamadagni's wish-granting cow and desiring it for himself, Kartavirya took by force what discipline should have refused him, and it was this single lapse, late in an otherwise long and largely just reign, that brought Parashurama's fury down on him and ended his life.

Read against the full boon rather than just its famous half, Kartavirya's story becomes less a simple tale of a strong man's fitting punishment and more a specific caution about exactly the risk he himself had tried to guard against by asking Dattatreya for both power and discipline together: that the second can erode even after the first has been granted permanently, and that a single failure of restraint, arriving after decades of justified rule, is enough to end everything the restraint had built.

A reader who has met the Kamadhenu confrontation elsewhere in this series can now read it with its missing half restored: not a story about a bad king reaping what he sowed, but about a genuinely good one, whose own explicit request centuries earlier had tried and ultimately failed to prevent exactly the ending he got.

Why is Kartavirya Arjuna also called Sahasrarjuna?+

Sahasrarjuna means thousand-armed Arjuna, referring directly to the boon of a thousand arms he received from Dattatreya, the detail that dominates his popular iconography and memory.
