Uttama was the son of King Uttanapada by his favoured queen Suruchi, and half-brother to Dhruva, whose own mother Suniti had been set aside in the household's affections, a slight that famously drove the young Dhruva into the forest to perform the penance that won him the boon of becoming the fixed pole star, a story with its own entry elsewhere in this series.

Once Dhruva returned from his penance transformed, the family rift that had originally driven him away was resolved, and Uttanapada, recognising Dhruva's spiritual attainment, is said to have wanted to install him as heir over his own favoured son Uttama, an offer Dhruva himself declined out of regard for his brother, insisting instead on a peaceable division that let Uttama retain his own share of the kingdom's succession.

The two brothers, whatever tension their mothers' rivalry had once created between them, are consistently described in the Bhagavata Purana's account as reconciled and genuinely fond of each other by adulthood, which is what makes what happens to Uttama land as a real loss rather than a plot mechanism.

Uttama, while hunting in the Himalayan forests, is said to have encountered a Yaksha, one of the semi-divine forest-dwelling beings under Kubera's own rulership, and been killed by him in the encounter, the specific provocation varying by version but the outcome consistent across tellings.

News of his half-brother's death reached Dhruva as a genuine grief rather than a political inconvenience, and the Bhagavata Purana describes him mourning Uttama sincerely before his grief hardened into a determination to hold the Yaksha responsible.

Dhruva marched an army into the Himalayan region associated with Kubera's own capital, Alakapuri, and fought the Yakshas directly, and the war that followed is described as fierce enough that Dhruva's own grandfather Manu is said to have intervened, counselling him against continuing a war of retribution that risked spiralling beyond what Uttama's death alone could justify.

Dhruva, persuaded by Manu's counsel, ultimately withdrew from the campaign rather than pursuing it to total destruction, and Kubera, recognising both the legitimacy of Dhruva's grief and the restraint he had shown in stopping, is said to have appeared before him and granted a boon, in some versions offering Dhruva unwavering devotion to Vishnu as the gift, which Dhruva accepted as the greater treasure over any material reward the war might otherwise have justified.

The episode sits in Dhruva's larger biography as a second major test after his childhood penance, showing a different register of the same underlying character: a boy who once channelled grief and humiliation into world-altering austerity now channels a brother's death into justified but ultimately bounded retribution, willing to fight but also willing to stop.

A reader who has met Dhruva's own penance and star elsewhere in this series can read this as its adult sequel: the child who refused to be lesser than his brother grows into a king who goes to war for that same brother's sake, and knows, this time, when to stop.

Why did Dhruva go to war against the Yakshas?+

A Yaksha killed Uttama during a hunting trip in the Himalayas. Dhruva, genuinely grieved, marched an army into the Yaksha territory near Kubera's capital Alakapuri to hold them responsible.
