Among the several search parties Sugriva dispatches in different directions to find Sita, Angada leads the group sent south, the direction that will eventually prove correct, accompanied by Hanuman, Jambavan and others. Sugriva sets a strict deadline for their return, and the southern party, having searched exhaustively along the coast without finding any trace of Sita, grows increasingly desperate as the deadline passes with nothing to show for it.
In their exhausted, thirsty search near the ocean, the group stumbles into a massive cave, dark and seemingly endless, from which birds with wet feathers are seen emerging, suggesting water inside. They enter looking for relief and find themselves inside an enormous, enchanted space unlike any natural cave, lit by an inexplicable golden light, filled with trees bearing fruit, lakes, and palaces built of gold and crystal, a hidden world that should not exist inside a mountain.
Having eaten and rested in this strange place, the vanaras realise they have lost track of how long they have been inside and, worse, cannot find the way back out. Trapped, past their deadline, and having sworn to Sugriva that they would rather die than return to Kishkindha having failed, several of the party, led by Angada, begin to prepare for death by fasting, believing they are permanently lost.

The cave, it turns out, is not simply enchanted but inhabited, by Swayamprabha, an ascetic woman devoted to Brahma, who has been granted this hidden, self-illuminated palace, Riksha Vila, to live in as a reward for her austerities and her devotion. She appears to the trapped, despairing vanaras and asks who they are and how they came to enter a place that ordinarily admits no one.
Hanuman, taking the lead, explains their mission on Rama's behalf, their search for Sita, and their inability to find the exit. Swayamprabha, moved by the seriousness of their purpose and recognising the importance of what they are attempting, agrees to help, though she notes that the only way out of her enchanted world is one that requires the travellers to close their eyes and be guided, since the path cannot simply be walked by anyone looking for it.
She leads the entire party, eyes shut, through a passage and brings them back out into ordinary daylight, on the shore of the southern ocean, precisely where they had entered, restoring them to the real world with the time they lost inside the mountain effectively recovered, since the delay caused by the cave is treated by the text as outside ordinary time rather than counted against their original deadline.
