During the Pandavas' forest exile, in the Vana Parva, a Brahmin's fire-sticks were taken by a deer, and Yudhishthira sent his brothers one after another to retrieve them and, along the way, to find water for the group, who were exhausted from the search.
Nakula found a lake first. A voice, belonging to a Yaksha who guarded the water, warned him not to drink until he had answered its questions. Nakula, thirsty and dismissive, ignored the warning and drank anyway, and dropped dead on the spot. When he did not return, Sahadeva went looking, found the same lake and his brother's body, received the same warning, ignored it in the same way, and died the same way. Arjuna went next, then Bhima, each finding the last brother's corpse, each receiving the identical warning from the same disembodied voice, each choosing to drink first and ask questions never, and each falling dead beside the others.
Yudhishthira, finally going to find all four missing brothers himself, arrived at the lake to find every one of them lying dead at its edge.
Grieving and thirsty himself, Yudhishthira still heard the same voice give the same warning, and this time it was heeded. He asked who was speaking and agreed to answer whatever was asked before touching the water.
What followed is one of the most quoted exchanges in the entire Mahabharata, a long sequence of philosophical riddles the Yaksha poses and Yudhishthira answers, ranging across the nature of dharma, wisdom, and the human condition. Asked what is faster than the wind, he answers the mind. Asked what is heavier than the earth, he answers a mother. Asked what makes a man truly a Brahmin, birth, conduct, learning, or study, he answers conduct alone, not birth. Asked what the greatest wonder in the world is, his answer has outlived every other line in the exchange: that day after day, countless people die, and yet the ones who remain living act as though they themselves will live forever, and that this, more than anything else, is the world's single greatest wonder.
He answers every question put to him without error, without evasion, and without the impatience that had killed his four brothers moments earlier at the very same water's edge.
Satisfied, the Yaksha reveals himself as Dharma, the god of righteousness, appearing in disguise as a Yaksha specifically to test Yudhishthira, his own son by an earlier divine union with Kunti, since Yudhishthira's birth father is Dharma himself. He then offers to restore one of the four dead brothers to life and asks Yudhishthira to choose which.
Yudhishthira's choice is often treated as the real test hidden inside the larger test. He asks for Nakula, his half-brother through Madri, rather than his full brothers Bhima or Arjuna, whom most in his position would have prioritised for their martial strength. His stated reasoning is that Kunti has a living son, himself, and that fairness demands Madri, his father Pandu's other wife, should not be left with none, since choosing on the basis of usefulness or personal closeness rather than basic equity would itself be a failure of the dharma he had just spent the whole exchange defending correctly.
Dharma, moved by this answer as much as by any of the riddles, restores not just Nakula but all four brothers to life, and grants Yudhishthira a further boon: that during their thirteenth year of exile, when the Pandavas must live in disguise undetected, no one will be able to recognise them regardless of how closely they are examined. The episode closes the Vana Parva's long middle section and is widely read as the clearest single portrait the epic offers of what makes Yudhishthira specifically suited to be called dharmaraja, not raw power, but the discipline to stop and think even at the edge of his own exhaustion and grief.
