What Is Aja Ekadashi?
Aja Ekadashi is the Ekadashi (11th tithi) of the Krishna Paksha (waning moon) in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada. It is a fast dedicated entirely to Lord Vishnu, and is also called Annada Ekadashi in some regions.
The word Aja means one who is unborn and eternal - a name of the Supreme Lord. Devotees believe that observing this vrat with faith removes the sins of many lifetimes and grants both worldly comfort and moksha. The fast is famous for its powerful katha of King Harishchandra, the king who never spoke a lie.
Aja Ekadashi 2026 - Date & Parana Time
📅 Tithi: Bhadrapada, Krishna Paksha Ekadashi 🗓️ Date: Early September 2026 (around 7-8 September)
Ekadashi tithi spans parts of two days, so the exact fasting day and the parana (fast-breaking) time change by city. Always confirm the start and end of the tithi in your local panchang.
General rules:
- The fast is kept from sunrise on Ekadashi to sunrise on Dwadashi.
- Parana is done on Dwadashi morning, after sunrise and within the prescribed window - never during Hari Vasara (the first quarter of Dwadashi).
- Breaking the fast late, or on Ekadashi itself, is avoided.
Aja Ekadashi Vrat Vidhi (Step by Step)
1. Dashami (day before): Eat a simple satvik meal once, avoid grains at night, and resolve (sankalp) to keep the fast. 2. Morning of Ekadashi: Bathe early, wear clean clothes and take the vow before a picture or idol of Lord Vishnu. 3. Puja: Offer tulsi leaves, yellow flowers, fruit, panchamrit and a ghee lamp to Vishnu. Tulsi is essential - never offer Vishnu puja without it. 4. Chant & read: Recite Vishnu Sahasranama or 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya', and read or listen to the Aja Ekadashi katha. 5. Fast: Keep nirjala (without water) if health allows, or take fruit, milk and water (phalahar). Avoid rice and grains completely. 6. Night: Stay awake (jagran) as far as possible, singing bhajans and remembering Hari. 7. Dwadashi: Do a short puja, donate food or money to a Brahmin or the needy, then break the fast (parana) in the correct muhurat.
The Katha of King Harishchandra

The Brahmavaivarta Purana tells why this Ekadashi is so powerful. The truthful King Harishchandra, to keep his word, had given away his entire kingdom, sold his wife and son, and himself become the servant of a chandala at a cremation ground.
Bound by his vow to truth, he endured terrible suffering yet never lied. One day the sage Gautama, seeing his pain, advised him to observe the Aja Ekadashi vrat. The king fasted and worshipped Vishnu with full faith.
By the merit of this single vrat, his sins and sorrows dissolved. His dead son was restored to life, his wife and kingdom returned, and at the end he attained the heavenly realm with his people. The katha teaches that truth and sincere devotion together can overcome any fate.
Significance & Benefits
- Removal of sins: Scriptures say its merit equals donating cows or bathing in holy tirthas.
- Peace of mind: The disciplined fast and Vishnu smaran calm the mind and steady the emotions.
- Family welfare: Many keep it for the health and harmony of their household.
- Path to moksha: Like all Ekadashis, it loosens worldly bondage and turns the heart toward liberation.
Even those who cannot fast fully can gain by eating only satvik phalahar, chanting Vishnu's names, and donating food to the needy.

When is Aja Ekadashi in 2026?+
Aja Ekadashi 2026 falls on the Bhadrapada Krishna Paksha Ekadashi, in early September (around 7-8 September). Because the tithi spans two days, confirm the exact fasting day and parana time in your local panchang.
Can I drink water during Aja Ekadashi vrat?+
Yes. A nirjala (waterless) fast is the strictest form, but it is optional. If your health does not permit it, you may take water, milk and fruit (phalahar). The essential rule is to avoid all grains and rice.
Why is tulsi important in Aja Ekadashi puja?+
Lord Vishnu is said to accept no offering without tulsi. A few tulsi leaves placed on the prasad and at his feet are considered essential to complete the puja. Do not pluck tulsi on Ekadashi itself - pick the leaves a day before.
What is the right time to break the Aja Ekadashi fast?+
Break the fast (parana) on Dwadashi morning after sunrise, within the muhurat given in your panchang, and avoid the Hari Vasara period (the first quarter of Dwadashi). Break it with satvik food after offering bhog to Vishnu.
