    Who Is Annapurna Mata

Annapurna Mata is the goddess of food, nourishment and abundance - the name means 'she who is full of food' (anna + purna). She is a benevolent form of Goddess Parvati, the queen of Kashi, who feeds all beings and ensures no devotee goes hungry. She is depicted holding a ladle and a bowl of food (kheer or grain), often shown serving Lord Shiva himself. Worshipping her blesses the home with a full kitchen, good health and gratitude for every meal.

    Annapurna Katha (In Brief)

A well-known katha tells how Lord Shiva once declared that the material world, including food, was mere maya (illusion). To teach that nourishment is sacred and real, Goddess Parvati disappeared, and the world was struck by famine - no grain would grow and beings grew weak. Moved by their suffering, the goddess reappeared in Kashi as Annapurna, setting up a kitchen to feed all. Shiva himself came with a begging bowl, and she lovingly fed him, showing that even the lord of the universe honours the giver of food.

Annapurna Chalisa - Essence and Opening Doha

The Annapurna Chalisa praises the goddess as the mother who fills every home and heart with nourishment. Opening doha:

Jai Annapurne Maa Bhavani, anna-daan ki swami raani. Sharan padi jo aapki, bhar do anna-bhandar nidaani.

Chaupai (sample): Jai jai Annapurna Maharani, Kashi-vaasi jag-jananee. Haath kalchhul anna ka pyaala, bhakt-jano ka karti rakhwaala.

The verses recall her grace as the queen of Kashi and the eternal giver of food and prosperity.

    Annapurna Vrat and Puja Vidhi

The Annapurna vrat is often observed on Margashirsha Purnima (Annapurna Jayanti) and on the Ashtami days. Vidhi: 1. Clean the kitchen thoroughly, as it is the goddess's seat in the home. 2. Bathe early and worship the cooking stove and grain along with an image of Annapurna Mata. 3. Light a ghee lamp, offer kheer, fresh grain, fruits and red or yellow flowers. 4. Recite the Annapurna Chalisa, listen to the katha and chant Om Hreem Shreem Annapurnaya Namah 108 times. 5. Perform the aarti and then cook and share a meal, feeding family, guests and the needy. 6. Never waste food on this day; serving others is the highest form of her worship.

    Benefits of Annapurna Worship

Worshipping Annapurna Mata is believed to ensure the home is never short of food, bring abundance and prosperity to the family, and bless the kitchen and those who cook in it. It is held to remove poverty, hunger and money worries, and to foster gratitude, health and contentment. Above all, her worship reminds devotees that food is sacred and that feeding others is among the greatest acts of devotion.

    Things to Keep in Mind

Treat your kitchen as a sacred space - keep it clean, never cook in anger, and offer the first portion of food to the goddess or fire before eating. Avoid wasting or disrespecting food, and try to feed at least one person, guest or animal daily. Keeping grain and the kitchen tidy in the south-east (the fire corner) and starting meals with gratitude pleases Annapurna Mata.
