Kuber is the Dhanapati - the treasurer of the gods and the guardian of wealth, gold and hidden treasures. He is the lord of the northern direction and the keeper of the nine nidhis (divine treasures). Often shown with a plump body, a money pot and a mace, he is a yaksha king who rewards honest effort and generosity with lasting abundance. While Goddess Lakshmi grants wealth, Kuber is believed to protect and multiply it, which is why both are worshipped together.

Kuber is worshipped for wealth, financial stability, business growth and freedom from debt. His most powerful day is Dhanteras, the first day of Diwali, when he is worshipped alongside Lakshmi and Dhanvantari. Diwali night, Akshaya Tritiya and the Kuber day of Friday are also auspicious. The north direction is his, so keeping the wealth corner of the home in the north and clean is considered favourable for his blessings.

The Kuber Chalisa glorifies him as the lord of riches who fills the homes of devotees with abundance. Opening doha:

Jai Yaksha-raj Kuber prabhu, dhan ke daata maan. Sharan padi jo aapki, dehu sampada-daan.

Chaupai (sample): Jai jai Kuber dhan ke swami, riddhi-siddhi ke daata naami. Uttar disha ke tum rakhwaare, bhar do bhandar bhakt hamaare.

The verses recall his nine treasures, his guardianship of the north and his grace toward the honest and the generous.

A shorter daily chant is Om Shreem Hreem Kleem Shreem Kuberaya Namah. These are repeated 108 times, ideally facing north, after lighting a lamp before Lakshmi-Kuber. Chanting on Dhanteras and Fridays is believed to be especially effective for attracting and protecting wealth.

1. On a Friday, Dhanteras or Diwali, bathe and wear clean yellow or white clothes; face north. 2. Place images of Lakshmi and Kuber together, with a kalash, coins and your account or cash box before them. 3. Light a ghee lamp and offer yellow flowers, sweets, dhania (coriander) and a few coins. 4. Recite the Kuber Chalisa, then chant the Kuber mantra 108 times on a yellow or crystal mala. 5. Perform the aarti of Lakshmi-Kuber and seek blessings for honest, growing wealth. 6. Keep the worshipped coins in your locker or wallet as a shubh symbol. Keep the north and the locker clean throughout the year.

Worship Lakshmi and Kuber together, as wealth that comes (Lakshmi) must also be protected (Kuber). Keep the north corner of your home or office clean, clutter-free and well lit, and place the locker so it opens toward the north. Earn honestly and share with the needy, since Kuber's blessings favour generosity over greed. Avoid keeping the wealth area dark, dirty or full of broken items.
