Who Is Lord Vishnu
Lord Vishnu is the Palanhar - the preserver and sustainer of the universe - and one of the supreme trinity along with Brahma and Shiva. Resting on the cosmic serpent Sheshnag upon the ocean of milk, he holds the shankha (conch), chakra (discus), gada (mace) and padma (lotus) in his four hands. Whenever dharma declines, he descends in avatars such as Rama and Krishna to restore balance. Devotees worship him as Narayan, the eternal refuge who removes fear and grants peace.
Significance and When to Worship
Thursday (Guruvar) is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, when devotees fast, wear yellow and offer yellow flowers and chana dal. Ekadashi, the eleventh day of each lunar fortnight, is his most sacred day for fasting and recitation. Festivals such as Vaikuntha Ekadashi, Anant Chaturdashi and the appearance days of his avatars are especially auspicious. Reciting the Vishnu Chalisa on these days is believed to bring lasting prosperity, harmony in the home and protection from misfortune.
Vishnu Chalisa - Essence and Opening Doha
The Vishnu Chalisa glorifies the lord as the all-pervading Narayan, the source and refuge of all creation. Opening doha:
Vishnu Vishnu Narayana, sumiran karo subhaag. Sankat saare door hon, jaage sab ke bhaag.
Chaupai (sample): Namo Vishnu bhagwan kharaari, kasht naashan akhil aghaari. Shankh-chakra-gada-padma viraaje, sundar peetambar tan saaje.
The forty verses recall his cosmic form, his ten avatars and his swift grace toward those who surrender to him.
Vishnu Mantra and Jap
The most beloved Vishnu mantra is the Ashtakshara (eight-syllable) mantra:
Om Namo Narayanaya
Another powerful chant is Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya, the twelve-syllable mantra. These are repeated 108 times on a tulsi mala, ideally facing east or north in the early morning. The simple name 'Hari' or 'Narayan' chanted with love is itself considered a complete prayer to Lord Vishnu.
Jap Vidhi - How to Recite
1. On a Thursday or Ekadashi, bathe and wear clean yellow clothes; face east. 2. Place an image of Vishnu or Vishnu-Lakshmi and a tulsi leaf before you. 3. Light a ghee lamp and offer yellow flowers, chana dal, tulsi and yellow sweets. 4. Begin with the opening doha, then recite the forty verses with devotion. 5. Chant Om Namo Narayanaya 108 times on a tulsi mala. 6. Conclude with the Vishnu aarti and pray for peace and prosperity. Keep tulsi in your offering, as Lord Vishnu does not accept bhog without it.
Benefits of the Vishnu Chalisa
Reciting the Vishnu Chalisa is believed to bring peace of mind, prosperity and stability to the home, harmony between family members and protection from sudden troubles. As the preserver, Vishnu safeguards what is built with honest effort, so his worship is especially valued for steady careers, lasting wealth and a calm, dharmic life. Regular recitation deepens faith and a sense of being protected by a higher grace.
Things to Keep in Mind
Worship Lord Vishnu with a calm, clean and devoted heart rather than haste. Keep a tulsi plant at home and water it daily, as tulsi is dear to him. Avoid non-vegetarian food and harsh speech on Thursdays and Ekadashi, and offer a share of your meal or charity to the needy. Sincere conduct and gratitude please Vishnu more than elaborate rituals alone.
