Who Is Batuk Bhairav?

Bhairav is a fierce yet compassionate form of Lord Shiva, worshipped as a powerful protector who guards devotees and sacred places and removes fear and negativity. Among his many forms, Batuk Bhairav is his gentle, youthful child form (batuk means a young boy or child).

Because of his childlike, benevolent nature, Batuk Bhairav is considered especially approachable and merciful - quick to bless his devotees and easy to please with simple, sincere worship. He is often depicted as a radiant young boy holding a trishul (trident), damaru and other symbols, sometimes accompanied by a dog, the vahana of Bhairav. Devotees turn to him for protection, courage, removal of obstacles and freedom from fear and negative influences. He offers the strength of Bhairav with the tenderness of a child.

Significance & Benefits

Devotees traditionally worship Batuk Bhairav for:

  • Protection from harm, negative energies, evil eye (nazar) and unseen fears, as Bhairav is the great guardian.
  • Courage and confidence to face difficulties and enemies without fear.
  • Removal of obstacles and troubles that block progress in life.
  • Peace of mind and relief from anxiety, fear and bad dreams.
  • Blessings for the home and family, keeping the household safe.

Because he is the child form, his worship is considered gentle and accessible even for householders and beginners, without the intense rituals of the fiercer Bhairav forms. He is closely linked to Shiva and the Shakti tradition, and is also honoured as a guardian deity in many temples. His grace is sought with faith and a pure heart, always within devotional and dharmic bounds.

Mantra & Puja Vidhi

A simple and widely chanted Batuk Bhairav mantra is:

'Om Hreem Batukaya Aapaduddharanaya Kuru Kuru Batukaya Hreem Om Namah Shivaya.'

A short seed form is 'Om Batuk Bhairavaya Namah.'

Simple puja vidhi:

  • Best time: Bhairav is especially worshipped on Sundays, Tuesdays and Kaal Ashtami (the Ashtami of the waning fortnight), and in the evening or at night.
  • Bathe, sit before an image of Batuk Bhairav or Lord Shiva, and light a diya, ideally with mustard or sesame oil, and incense.
  • Offer flowers, and traditional bhog such as sweets, jaggery, or milk; some devotees offer prasad and then feed a dog, honouring Bhairav's vahana.
  • Chant the mantra with devotion, ideally 108 times using a rudraksha mala.
  • Pray sincerely for protection and courage, and perform aarti at the end.

Worship him with a calm, respectful and devotional heart. For any elaborate tantric worship, guidance from a knowledgeable teacher is advised. These are traditional beliefs.
