Who is Lord Bhairav
Lord Bhairav is the fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva - created when Shiva took terrifying form to protect the cosmos. He is the Kotwal (protector/sheriff) of all of Shiva's domains, especially Kashi (Varanasi).
The cosmic story: When Brahma developed pride and claimed superiority over Shiva, Bhairav emerged from Shiva's anger - terrifying, dark, with sword and trident. He cut off Brahma's fifth head as punishment for his arrogance, and was cursed to wander as a beggar carrying that skull until reaching Kashi.
In Kashi, the curse lifted. Bhairav became the eternal guardian of the city - the deity even Shiva entrusted with the spiritual capital of Hinduism.
Why he's both fierce and loving: Bhairav's fierceness is protective. He scares away negativity but never harms his devotees. To his devotees, he is gentle, generous, and remarkably accessible.
Two main forms:
1. Kaal Bhairav (Time-Bhairav):
- Most worshipped form
- Controller of time itself
- Protector of Kashi
- Removes time-bound suffering
- His vehicle is a black dog
2. Batuk Bhairav (Boy-Bhairav):
- Childlike form
- Gentler aspect
- Easier for householders
- Especially for children's protection
The 8 forms (Ashta Bhairav): 1. Asitanga Bhairav - Black-bodied; unwavering courage 2. Ruru Bhairav - Auspicious (Ruru = peaceful) 3. Chanda Bhairav - Fierce destroyer 4. Krodha Bhairav - Anger-form, controls anger 5. Unmatta Bhairav - Madness-form, removes mental disorders 6. Kapaala Bhairav - Skull-bearer, removes pride 7. Bhishana Bhairav - Terrifier of evil 8. Samhaara Bhairav - Total destroyer of negativity
Each form rules a different direction and serves different purposes.

Powerful Bhairav Mantras
1. Beej Mantra (most powerful): 'Om Hreem Bhairavaaya Namah.'
(ॐ ह्रीं भैरवाय नमः।)
Universally safe. 108 times daily. Especially powerful Tuesday and Saturday evening.
2. Kaal Bhairav Mantra: 'Om Kaalabhaairavaaya Namah.'
(ॐ कालभैरवाय नमः।)
For major time-related issues - astrology troubles, repeated patterns, generational karma.
3. Batuk Bhairav Mantra (gentler): 'Om Hreem Batuk-bhairavaaya Aapad-uddharanaaya Kuru Kuru Batukaaya Hreem.'
Long but powerful. For removing severe troubles (Aapad-uddharana = lifting from misfortune).
4. Bhairav Gayatri: 'Om Tat-purushaaya Vidmahe, Mahaa-bhairavaaya Dheemahi, Tan-no Bhairavah Prachodayaat.'
5. Kaal Bhairav Ashtakam (8 verses): Composed by Adi Shankaracharya. The most beautiful Bhairav stotra. 5-7 minute recitation. Used in major Bhairav pujas at Kashi Kaal Bhairav temple.
Opening: 'Devarajasa-sevy-amaana-paavanaaaghri-pankajam, Vyaala-yagnyasootram-indu-shekharam Krpaakaram. Naarad-aadi-yogibhirgu-suresha-vandit-vibhraajitam, Kaashikaa-pur-aadhinaatham Kaala-bhairavam Bhaje.'
'I worship Kaal Bhairav, lord of Kashi city - whose lotus feet are served by gods, who wears serpent as sacred thread, moon on head, source of grace, worshipped by Narada and yogis, splendidly resplendent.'
Daily practice for householders: Tier 1 mantra 'Om Hreem Bhairavaaya Namah' 108 times - safe, universal. Especially light a mustard oil diya facing south on Saturday evening.
The dog connection: Bhairav's vehicle is a black dog. Feeding stray black dogs is a powerful Bhairav practice. Many devotees ensure they feed at least one stray dog daily - Bhairav considers it equivalent to feeding him.
Bhairav Puja Vidhi & Best Times
Best time: Sunday or Saturday evening (after sunset). Midnight for advanced.
Best day: Saturday (Shani-Bhairav combined). Sunday. Kalashtami (8th tithi after Purnima - monthly Bhairav day). Kaal Bhairav Jayanti (annual, November) is supreme.
Items needed:
- Bhairav photo or murti (Kaal Bhairav for protection, Batuk for gentler)
- Black or red cloth
- Black sesame seeds
- Mustard oil diya
- Camphor
- Bhog: black sesame laddoo, jaggery, urad dal
- Fresh flowers (any color, but red preferred)
- Akshat
- Bell
- Coconut
Step-by-step:
1. Bath, wear black/red/white (avoid bright colors for Bhairav) 2. Sit before Bhairav facing south or southwest 3. Sankalpa - focus on protection, removing fear, defeating enemies 4. Light mustard oil diya with extra wicks (5 wicks for special days) 5. Apply red sindoor or black sesame oil tilak 6. Offer black sesame seeds and red flowers 7. Recite Tier 1 mantra 108 times 'Om Hreem Bhairavaaya Namah' 8. Optional: Kaal Bhairav Ashtakam (5 min) 9. Aarti - sing Bhairav aarti 10. Distribute prasad 11. Feed black sesame items to a stray dog if possible (key practice)
Total time: 25-35 minutes.
Special - Kalashtami monthly observance: Every month on the 8th tithi of Krishna paksha (waning moon), do Bhairav puja:
- Vrat from sunrise to moonrise
- Evening puja with full vidhi
- Read Bhairav Ashtakam
- Feed dogs
- Donate to needy at night
Sustained Kalashtami observance over years creates major protective field.
Kaal Bhairav Jayanti (November): Annual major Bhairav festival. Same vidhi but more elaborate. Many devotees visit Kashi Kaal Bhairav temple this day.
Critical rules:
1. Never disrespect dogs. Especially black dogs. Causing harm = Bhairav's anger.
2. Never take Bhairav as 'just another Shiva form'. He has his own protocols.
3. Don't keep his murti in bedroom. Dedicated puja area.
4. Worship after sunset preferred. Not casual midday.
5. Always feed dogs as part of puja. Even biscuits or roti to street dogs counts.
Benefits of Bhairav Worship

1. Removal of Fear (most direct) - Bhairav's name itself means 'fearful' but his blessing brings fearlessness. Daily mantra dissolves chronic anxiety and phobias.
2. Protection from Black Magic - Among the most powerful anti-tantric deities. The 8 Bhairavs cover all directions of attack.
3. Protection from Time-Bound Troubles - Kaal Bhairav controls time. He removes 'cursed periods' in life - bad luck phases, repeated misfortune patterns.
4. Protection during Travel - Travelers traditionally pray to Bhairav before journeys. Especially powerful for night travel.
5. Removal of Pitra Dosha - Bhairav helps trapped ancestors find peace. Combined with Pitru Paksha tarpan = strong remedy.
6. Court Cases - Bhairav as cosmic judge (Kotwal) is invoked for legal victories. 11 mantras before hearings.
7. Removing Ego (Mada) - One of his 8 forms specifically destroys pride. Daily mantra dissolves arrogance over time.
8. Children's Protection - Batuk Bhairav (boy-form) is gentle protector for children's welfare.
9. Removal of Mental Disorders - Unmatta Bhairav rules madness-states. For chronic mental issues (alongside medical care).
10. Direct Path to Shiva - Bhairav is Shiva's protective extension. His grace opens gateway to Mahadeva himself.
The Kashi connection: Bhairav rules Varanasi. Pilgrims to Kashi traditionally first visit Kaal Bhairav temple to take 'permission' before entering the city. Even Lord Vishnu's blessing pales compared to Kaal Bhairav's permission for Kashi.
The mukti significance: Kashi is the city where Bhairav's grace ensures liberation. Anyone dying in Kashi reportedly receives Shiva-mantra in their ear (Tarak mantra) at death - directly from Shiva. Bhairav as gatekeeper makes this possible.
The 41-day intensive: For major life threat or chronic trouble, 41-day daily Bhairav mantra. Pair with Saturday Shani worship + Tuesday Hanuman worship for triple-protection.
Common Mistakes & Conclusion
Common mistakes:
1. Disrespecting dogs. Major error. Even unintentional harm to dogs requires apology to Bhairav.
2. Worshipping at noon. Bhairav prefers evening/night.
3. Wearing bright colors. Black, red, white only.
4. Skipping mustard oil diya. His preferred oil.
5. Casual approach. He is fierce - treat with respect.
6. Not feeding dogs. Integral part of practice.
7. Attempting advanced tantra without guru. Stick to Tier 1 mantra.
8. Misusing for harm. Backfires fiercely.
9. Skipping Kalashtami. Monthly opportunity.
10. Treating only as 'minor Shiva form'. He has his own importance.
Three commitment levels:
Level 1 - Saturday/Sunday weekly:
- 25-minute puja
- Feed one dog
Level 2 - Daily mantra + monthly Kalashtami:
- Tier 1 mantra 108 daily
- Full Kalashtami observance
Level 3 - Devoted Bhairav sadhak:
- Daily + weekly + Kalashtami + Annual Kaal Bhairav Jayanti
- Annual visit to Kashi Kaal Bhairav temple
- Continuous dog-feeding practice
A final reflection:
Bhairav is the deity who protects you when others can't. When threats are unusual, when fears are overwhelming, when 'something is wrong' but you can't pinpoint what - Bhairav responds.
His fierce form scares those who'd harm you. His gentle Batuk form comforts your inner child. The 8 Ashta Bhairavs cover every cosmic direction.
In ancient times, every village had a Bhairav shrine at the boundary - protecting from evil entering. Modern life, despite city walls, still needs that protection.
Begin this Saturday evening. Light mustard diya facing south. Recite 'Om Hreem Bhairavaaya Namah' 108 times. Feed a stray dog.
The protector arrives.
Jai Bhairav Baba. Om Kaala-bhairavaaya Namah.
