What Is Bhishma Panchak?

Bhishma Panchak, also called Panch Bhishma, is a sacred vrat observed over the last five days of the month of Kartik - from Prabodhini (Dev Uthani) Ekadashi to Kartik Purnima. Kartik is considered one of the holiest months for the worship of Lord Vishnu, and these final five days are held to be especially auspicious.

The vrat is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and honours Bhishma Pitamah, the great grandsire of the Mahabharata, renowned for his vow of lifelong celibacy, his righteousness and his supreme devotion. It is believed that observing these five days with fasting, worship and self-restraint brings great spiritual merit and the grace of Lord Vishnu. Many who could not observe the full month of Kartik vrat keep these concluding five days to gain its blessings. It is a serene, devotional observance.

The Katha & Significance of Bhishma

The vrat is deeply connected to Bhishma Pitamah of the Mahabharata:

  • Bhishma, blessed with ichha-mrityu (death at his own will), lay on a bed of arrows after the great war of Kurukshetra, waiting for the auspicious Uttarayana to leave his body.
  • During this time, at the request of the Pandavas and Lord Krishna, Bhishma imparted the great teachings on dharma, righteousness and devotion (the Vishnu Sahasranama is part of this) to Yudhishthira, which became timeless guidance for humanity.
  • Pleased with Bhishma's wisdom, righteousness and unwavering devotion, Lord Krishna is said to have blessed that whoever observes a vrat in his honour during these five days of Kartik will be freed of sins and gain great merit.
  • Because Bhishma accepted only pure, sattvic sustenance and lived a life of supreme self-discipline, the vrat is observed with simplicity, restraint and devotion.

The observance thus honours a life of duty, self-control and surrender to the Divine - the details are held as sacred tradition.

How Bhishma Panchak Is Observed

The vrat is kept over the five days from Dev Uthani Ekadashi to Kartik Purnima:

  • Sankalp: On Ekadashi, take a resolve to observe the five-day vrat with devotion to Lord Vishnu and reverence for Bhishma.
  • Fasting and sattvic food: Devotees observe fasting or eat only simple sattvic food. Some follow a traditional practice of eating specific foods on each day, and many avoid grains, onion and garlic; observe according to your capacity and health.
  • Worship of Vishnu: Bathe early, worship Lord Vishnu with tulsi, flowers, fruits and a diya, and chant the Vishnu Sahasranama and Vishnu mantras such as 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya'.
  • Tarpan to Bhishma: It is customary to offer water (tarpan) to Bhishma Pitamah, remembering him with respect, on these days and especially on Bhishma Ashtami later in the year.
  • Self-restraint: Observe truthfulness, celibacy, calmness and charity through the five days, in the spirit of Bhishma's discipline.
  • Conclusion: On Kartik Purnima, complete the vrat with worship, offer donations (daan), and take a holy dip or light lamps if possible.

Observe within your comfort and health, guided by family custom or a priest. The essence is devotion, purity and self-discipline.
