What Is Ekadashi Vrat
Ekadashi falls on the eleventh day of each lunar fortnight, twice a month, and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is among the most respected fasts in the Hindu tradition, observed for purity of body and mind, spiritual merit and the blessings of Vishnu. The most important rule is the complete avoidance of rice and all grains, which is why Ekadashi food is limited to falahar (fruit-based fasting food).
What to Eat on Ekadashi
Allowed falahar foods include:
- Fresh and dry fruits of all kinds
- Milk, curd, paneer and ghee
- Sabudana (sago) and makhana (fox nuts)
- Kuttu atta (buckwheat) and singhara atta (water chestnut)
- Potato, sweet potato, raw banana and pumpkin
- Sendha namak (rock salt) only
- Peanuts, dry fruits, and coconut
Drink plenty of water, milk and fresh fruit juice through the day to stay light and energetic.
What to Avoid on Ekadashi
Strictly avoid these on Ekadashi:
- Rice in every form (the most important rule)
- All grains - wheat, semolina, maida, besan, dal and pulses
- Regular table salt (use only sendha namak)
- Onion and garlic (tamasic foods)
- Non-vegetarian food, eggs, alcohol and tobacco
- Honey on some traditions, and any stale or leftover food
Many devotees also avoid eating on the Dashami (previous) night and break the fast only on Dwadashi (the next day) at the right time.
Sample Falahar Dishes

Easy and filling Ekadashi dishes:
- Sabudana khichdi with peanuts, potato and sendha namak
- Kuttu ki puri or singhara atta paratha with aloo sabzi
- Sabudana kheer or makhana kheer in milk
- Aloo chaat with rock salt and lemon
- Fruit chaat and curd with fruits
- Roasted makhana and peanuts as a light snack
Keep dishes simple and lightly spiced so the fast stays calming rather than heavy.
Rules of the Ekadashi Fast
1. Wake early, bathe and worship Lord Vishnu, offering tulsi leaves. 2. Take a sankalp (resolve) for the type of fast - nirjala (no water), phalahar (fruits) or one-time meal. 3. Chant Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya and read Vishnu stotras through the day. 4. Avoid sleeping in the day, anger, gossip and harsh speech. 5. Break the fast on Dwadashi within the prescribed time (parana), starting with tulsi water. Choose the strictness of the fast according to your health and capacity.
Who Should Take Care
A strict or nirjala Ekadashi is not advisable for everyone. People with diabetes, low blood pressure, acidity or other medical conditions, pregnant and nursing mothers, children and the elderly should choose a gentle phalahar fast with regular fluids and fruits, or skip fasting entirely. If you feel dizzy or weak, eat something and rest. Always consult a doctor before attempting a waterless fast if you have any health concern.
