Friday Lakshmi Puja Vidhi at Home: Complete Weekly Wealth Practice

    8 min readPublished March 23, 2026

    Why Friday is Lakshmi's Day

Friday (Shukravar) is named after Shukra graha (Venus) - the planet of love, beauty, luxury, abundance. Lakshmi rules Shukra; Lakshmi IS the deity behind Shukra's planetary energy.

This is why Friday is sacred to Lakshmi:

    • Venus rules wealth, beauty, love, harmony - all Lakshmi's domains
    • Friday transactions are considered most auspicious
    • Most Indian businesses do special Friday puja or accounting closing
    • Marriage proposals, jewelry purchases traditionally happen on Friday
    • Real estate deals are signed on Friday for prosperity

The cosmic logic: The day itself carries Shukra's energy. By doing Lakshmi puja on Friday, you align your spiritual practice with the cosmic frequency that's already pro-prosperity that day. It's like swimming with the current rather than against it.

Why weekly (not daily): Unlike Hanuman or Shiva who can be worshipped daily, Lakshmi prefers special attention on her dedicated day. Daily light worship is fine, but Friday is when she expects elaborate puja.

Think of it like this: a busy CEO has open-door policy on Fridays only. You can leave a note other days, but Friday is when she actually receives you.

The Solah Shukravar (16-Friday) vow: The most popular Lakshmi commitment is 16 consecutive Fridays of full puja. Tradition says by the 16th Friday, one major financial issue will be resolved.

🌹 The Vandnaa App's Lakshmi module has Friday puja checklist, 16-Friday tracker, Solah Shukravar katha audio, and personalized panchang for your city's Friday Pradosh kaal.

    Solah Shukravar Vrat Rules

    Solah Shukravar Vrat Rules

The 16-Friday vow is the most popular Lakshmi commitment in modern Hindu households.

    Vrat structure:

    • 16 consecutive Fridays of full Lakshmi puja
    • Light fasting on each Friday
    • Read Solah Shukravar Katha on each Friday
    • Final Friday - extended celebration with extra bhog

    Vrat food rules:

    • Single sattvic meal on Friday
    • Only fruits, milk, vrat-friendly items till noon
    • No regular grains (rice, wheat) - but yellow foods preferred (turmeric rice, yellow halwa, kheer with saffron)
    • No salt (rock salt only)
    • No onion-garlic
    • Vrat allows: paneer, ghee, fruits, sabudana, makhana

Daily activities to avoid on these 16 Fridays:

    • Don't engage in arguments
    • Don't eat at non-veg restaurants
    • Don't accept money you didn't earn
    • Don't speak harshly to women, especially mother/wife (Lakshmi resides in them)
    • Don't sweep house after sunset (Lakshmi might leave)
    • Don't refuse food/water to anyone who comes to your door

Things to actively do on these Fridays:

    • Donate to a poor person, especially a young woman
    • Give kheer or sweet to ANY married woman (suhaagan)
    • Plant or water a Tulsi (if you have one)
    • Light a diya at sunset
    • Read at least one chapter of Bhagavad Gita

The Solah Shukravar Katha: The story is read during each Friday puja. It is the tale of a woman who, by completing 16 Fridays of Lakshmi vrat, transformed her family's financial situation completely. The story varies by region but the moral is consistent: sustained Friday worship + dharmic life = Lakshmi's complete grace.

On the 16th Friday - Udyapan (completion):

    • Extended puja (60 minutes instead of 30)
    • Extra elaborate bhog (multiple items)
    • Distribute prasad to 16 married women
    • Donate to charity
    • Give a small gift (tulsi pot, sweets, rupees) to 16 people

The promise: Tradition says by the 16th Friday, one major financial issue in the devotee's life will be resolved - paid debt, found job, cleared dispute, business turnaround, marriage match, etc.

    Common Friday Lakshmi Puja Mistakes

    1. Using mustard oil for diya. That's for Hanuman. Lakshmi requires pure ghee or cotton wick.

    2. Skipping Tulsi. Tulsi is mandatory for Lakshmi. Without it, the offering is incomplete.

    3. Wearing dark colors. Yellow, orange, red, white only. Black blocks Lakshmi.

    4. Doing puja in messy/dirty room. Lakshmi resides in cleanliness. Clean the puja area thoroughly before starting.

    5. Skipping bhog. Sweet item is essential. No bhog = incomplete offering.

    6. Eating non-veg the day before. Even Thursday non-veg disturbs Friday Lakshmi puja.

    7. Doing it late afternoon (1-4 PM). This is Surya's peak - wrong for Lakshmi. Morning or sunset only.

    8. Skipping bell at aarti. Bell-ringing is part of complete aarti.

    9. Spending the cash placed before Lakshmi. That cash is 'charged' - keep it permanently in your wallet/cash box. Never spend that specific cash.

    10. Treating it as one-time only. Lakshmi blessings come from sustained Friday practice. One Friday won't transform; 16+ Fridays will.

    11. Asking for greedy/unjust wealth. Lakshmi blesses dharmic earnings, not lottery wins, gambling, or ill-gotten gains.

    12. Sweeping after sunset on Friday. Tradition: 'Lakshmi might be entering - never sweep her out'.

    13. Refusing food/charity on Friday. Anyone who comes to your door on Friday should receive something - food, water, or coin.

    14. Skipping the prasad distribution. Eating prasad alone reduces multiplicative merit. Always share.

    Friday Puja for Specific Intentions

For business breakthrough: Place business documents/key/ledger before Lakshmi during recitation. Add Kanakadhara stotra recitation. 16-Friday vow ideal.

For job seekers: Recite while visualizing the job offer. Add 11 Kanakadhara before each interview.

For salary hike/promotion: 11 weeks before annual review.

For marriage proposals (especially women): Friday Lakshmi puja paired with daily Tulsi care. Solah Shukravar specifically for marriage.

For removing financial obstacles: 21 mantras of 'Om Hreem Shreem Mahalakshmiyei Namah' alongside primary mantra. Pair with Bajrang Baan for energetic blockages.

For property/real estate purchase: 21 days continuous Friday-style daily mini-puja. Major decision around the puja.

For removing debt: Focus on 'Om Hreem Shreem' bija mantras. Place debt papers before Lakshmi during recitation.

For family financial harmony: Wife traditionally does this for husband's earnings. Or husband for wife's blessings.

For children's future welfare: Mother's Friday Lakshmi puja with child's name in sankalpa.

For removing Lakshmi-bandhan (mysterious wealth blockage): 16-Friday vow + Kanakadhara + Shree Suktam combined. Most powerful classical practice.

Make Friday Your Lakshmi Day Forever

Make Friday Your Lakshmi Day Forever

Of all Lakshmi practices, Friday weekly puja is the most accessible serious commitment. 30-45 minutes one day a week. Sustainable for life.

    Three commitment levels:

    Level 1 - Casual:

    • Light a diya + offer flowers every Friday
    • 10 minutes
    • Anyone can sustain

    Level 2 - Householder Standard:

    • Full 30-45 minute Friday puja
    • Sustained for years
    • Strong financial foundation

    Level 3 - Solah Shukravar (16-Friday vow):

    • 16 consecutive Fridays of full puja with vrat
    • Done at least once in life, ideally every 4 years
    • Major financial transformation

    A final reflection:

Friday is not just a day of the week. For the devotee, it is the weekly meeting with Lakshmi Ma. She visits homes that welcome her on Friday. Skipping = she finds another home.

Many devotees report that Lakshmi starts blessing their dreams after enough Fridays. Some receive specific intuitions about money. All report - without exception - that financial life slowly becomes more abundant, less anxious, more graceful.

Make Friday your day. Tell Lakshmi you are coming. She has been waiting for you across many lifetimes.

Om Shri Mahalakshmiyei Namah. Om Hreem Shreem Mahalakshmiyei Namah.

    Quick Answers

What time is best for Friday Lakshmi puja?+

Sunrise to 10 AM is the peak. Pradosh kaal (just before sunset) is also auspicious. Avoid noon to 4 PM. Pick a time you can sustain weekly.

Should I do Friday puja alone or with family?+

Both work. Family puja amplifies merit through collective bhakti. If alone, that's also fine - Lakshmi receives sincere individual devotion equally. Many homes do family puja Friday morning + individual silent meditation.

Can men do Friday Lakshmi puja or is it women-only?+

Both men and women can. Women's Friday puja is traditional but not exclusive. Many businessmen do Friday Lakshmi puja for company welfare. Marital tradition: wife often does it for husband's earnings. Either spouse alone is also acceptable.

What if I miss a Friday during my 16-Friday vow?+

Tradition says the count restarts from week 1. To make up: do 7 days of daily Lakshmi mantra jap (108 times each), then resume. Some teachers permit 'doubling up' but strict practice is to restart.

Do I need a brahmin priest for Friday puja?+

No. Friday Lakshmi puja is traditionally a household practice. No priest needed. Lakshmi is the deity of the householder family. Read the mantras and aarti in your own voice.

Can I do Friday puja during my menstrual period?+

Traditional rule restricts active puja during menstruation. Modern devotees handle individually. Common middle path: don't perform full puja, but recite Lakshmi mantra silently. Family member can do the puja with your sankalpa.
