    What Is Gita Jayanti

Gita Jayanti celebrates the day Lord Krishna spoke the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. It is the only jayanti of a scripture rather than a person, honouring the birth of the Gita itself. Falling on Mokshada Ekadashi, it joins the highest teaching - Krishna's counsel on duty, devotion and the soul - with one of the most liberating fasting days of the year.

    Tithi and When It Falls

Gita Jayanti falls on the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha in the month of Margashirsha, the eleventh day of the bright half. This same day is Mokshada Ekadashi. In the Gregorian calendar it usually comes in November or December. Because Ekadashi vrat timings depend on sunrise and the parana (fast-breaking) window, please confirm the exact date and muhurat on the Vandnaa Panchang.

    Significance of Mokshada Ekadashi

The name Mokshada means the giver of moksha (liberation). It is believed that observing this Ekadashi with fasting and devotion frees the soul from the cycle of birth and death and can even bring peace to departed ancestors. Combined with Gita Jayanti, the day carries a double blessing - the merit of the vrat and the grace of receiving Krishna's eternal teaching on the immortal soul and the path to freedom.

    Vrat and Puja Vidhi

    1. On Dashami (the previous day), eat a simple sattvic meal and resolve to keep the vrat. 2. On Ekadashi, bathe early and take the sankalp to fast and worship Krishna and the Gita. 3. Place a copy of the Bhagavad Gita beside Krishna's image; light a ghee lamp, tulsi, flowers and incense. 4. Offer naivedya without grains, and recite or listen to chapters of the Gita through the day. 5. Chant Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya and the Hare Krishna mahamantra, staying in remembrance. 6. Keep a night vigil if possible, and break the fast (parana) the next morning on Dwadashi within the prescribed time.

    Mantras and Gita Shlokas

    Chant the Krishna mantra:

    Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya

A beloved Gita shloka to recite on this day is Krishna's assurance:

Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam sharanam vraja. Aham tvam sarva-papebhyo mokshayishyami ma shuchah.

This verse - 'abandon all dharmas and surrender to Me alone; I shall free you from all sins, do not grieve' - captures the heart of Mokshada Ekadashi.

    Benefits of Observing the Day

Observing Gita Jayanti and the Mokshada Ekadashi vrat is believed to wash away sins, grant peace of mind, deepen devotion to Krishna and bring the soul closer to liberation. Reading even a few verses of the Gita on this day is said to be especially fruitful, offering clarity in confusion, courage in difficulty and the timeless wisdom to live with detachment and faith.
