    What Is Guru Nanak Jayanti

Guru Nanak Jayanti, also called Gurpurab or Guru Nanak Prakash Utsav, celebrates the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Sikh Guru and the founder of Sikhism. It is the most sacred and joyous festival for Sikhs around the world. Guru Nanak taught a message of one formless God, equality of all people, honest living and selfless service, and his birthday is a day of devotion, community and shared meals that welcomes people of every faith.

    Tithi, Timing and Month

Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated on Kartik Purnima - the full moon day of the Hindu month of Kartik. In the Gregorian calendar this usually falls in November (occasionally late October). Because the festival follows the lunar Purnima tithi, the exact Gregorian date changes each year. For Guru Nanak Jayanti 2026, please confirm the exact date and the Purnima timing on the Vandnaa Panchang, since the tithi start and end times vary by location.

The Life Story of Guru Nanak

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in 1469 at Rai Bhoi Ki Talwandi, now called Nankana Sahib (in present-day Pakistan). Even as a child he showed deep spiritual wisdom and questioned empty rituals and divisions of caste and creed. After a profound divine experience at the river Bein, he declared the timeless truth, There is no Hindu, there is no Muslim, meaning all humanity is one before God. He travelled far and wide on long journeys called udasis, spreading his message before settling at Kartarpur, where he founded a community built on prayer, work and sharing.

    How Gurpurab Is Celebrated

Gurpurab celebrations span several days with deep devotion: 1. Akhand Path - a continuous 48-hour reading of the Guru Granth Sahib is completed before the day. 2. Prabhat Pheris - early morning processions of hymn singing wind through neighbourhoods. 3. Nagar Kirtan - a grand procession led by the Panj Pyare carries the Guru Granth Sahib. 4. Kirtan and Katha - devotional singing and discourses fill the gurudwaras. 5. Langar - a free community kitchen serves meals to all, regardless of religion or status. Gurudwaras are lit up and decorated, and many also light lamps and candles at home in the evening.

The Core Teachings of Guru Nanak

Guru Nanak's teachings begin with Ik Onkar - there is only One God, formless, eternal and present in all. His central principles include: 1. Naam Japna - remembering God through prayer and meditation. 2. Kirat Karni - earning an honest, hard-working living. 3. Vand Chakna - sharing with others and helping the needy. He fiercely rejected caste, ritualism and the oppression of women, teaching the equality of all human beings. Seva (selfless service) and humility were, for him, the highest forms of worship.

Langar - The Spirit of Equality

The tradition of langar, the free community kitchen, beautifully captures Guru Nanak's teaching. Everyone, regardless of religion, caste, wealth or status, sits together on the floor as equals and shares a simple vegetarian meal cooked and served by volunteers. Langar embodies seva, humility and the truth that all people are one family before God. On Gurpurab, langar is served on a vast scale, and taking part - whether by cooking, serving or simply sharing the meal - is itself a form of worship.

Why Guru Nanak Jayanti Matters Today

Guru Nanak's message of one God, equality and honest service speaks powerfully to a divided world. His rejection of discrimination and his vision of every human as equal remain a beacon for harmony across faiths. Gurpurab invites everyone, Sikh or not, to remember God simply, work honestly, share generously and serve others without pride. In a single line - pray, work and share - he offered a whole way of living with dignity and love.
