    What Is Onam

Onam is the most important festival of Kerala, celebrated as both a grand harvest festival and a homecoming for the beloved King Mahabali. It is a joyous, inclusive celebration observed by people of all communities, marking abundance, gratitude and unity. Spanning ten days, Onam fills Kerala with flower carpets, feasts, boat races, dance and song, honouring a golden age when, it is said, everyone lived in equality, honesty and happiness.

    Timing and Month

Onam falls in the Malayalam month of Chingam, the first month of the Malayalam calendar, which corresponds to August or September in the Gregorian calendar. The main day, Thiruvonam, is marked by the Thiruvonam nakshatra (star) in Chingam. The festivities begin on Atham day and culminate ten days later on Thiruvonam. Because the dates follow the Malayalam calendar and nakshatra, the exact Gregorian dates shift each year, so please confirm the Onam 2026 dates and Thiruvonam timing on the Vandnaa Panchang.

    The Story of King Mahabali

Onam celebrates the legend of King Mahabali (Maveli), a wise and generous asura king under whom Kerala enjoyed a golden age of equality, prosperity and truth, with no poverty or deceit. His growing power and fame worried the gods. To restore cosmic balance, Lord Vishnu took his fifth avatar as Vamana, a dwarf Brahmin, and asked Mahabali for three paces of land. With two strides Vamana covered the earth and sky; for the third, the humble king offered his own head. Pleased by his devotion and selflessness, Vishnu granted Mahabali the boon to return and visit his people once every year - that visit is Onam.

    The Ten Days of Onam

Onam unfolds over ten days, each with its own name and mood: 1. Atham - the first day, when the flower carpet (pookalam) is begun. 2. Chithira, Chodi, Vishakam - the pookalam grows and shopping and preparations build. 3. Anizham - the famous Vallamkali snake-boat races are associated with these days. 4. Thriketta, Moolam - homes are decorated and smaller feasts begin. 5. Pooradam - clay images of Mahabali (Onathappan) are placed at the centre of the pookalam. 6. Uthradam - the eve, known as First Onam, a day of final preparations. 7. Thiruvonam - the main and most sacred day, when Mahabali is believed to visit and the grand sadya is served.

    How Onam Is Celebrated

Onam is rich with colour, food and tradition: 1. Pookalam - intricate carpets of fresh flowers are laid in courtyards to welcome Mahabali. 2. Onam Sadya - a grand vegetarian feast of many dishes served on a banana leaf. 3. Vallamkali - thrilling snake-boat races on Kerala's backwaters. 4. Pulikali - the playful tiger dance with painted performers. 5. Thiruvathirakali and folk dances, traditional games, and new clothes (Onakkodi). Homes are cleaned and decorated, families gather, and Onathappan images honour the visiting king at the heart of the celebration.

    The Onam Sadya

The Onam Sadya is the heart of the feast - a lavish vegetarian banquet traditionally served on a fresh banana leaf. It can include over two dozen dishes, such as rice, sambar, avial, thoran, olan, kalan, pickles, pappadam and the sweet payasam dessert. Each dish has its place on the leaf, and the meal is eaten with the hands in a fixed order. The sadya celebrates the harvest's abundance and the spirit of sharing, bringing families and communities together at one table.

    The Deeper Meaning of Onam

Beyond the festivity, Onam carries a gentle message. King Mahabali's golden age stands for a society of equality, honesty and shared prosperity, and his willingness to give everything teaches humility and selflessness. The festival reminds us that true greatness lies in generosity, that all are equal at the same table, and that gratitude for the harvest and the earth is itself a form of worship. Above all, Onam is about welcoming others home with open hearts.
