The Story - Hanuman Frees Shani from Ravana

According to a popular tradition, the mighty demon king Ravana had captured all the navagraha (nine planets) and imprisoned them in Lanka, including Shani Dev, whom he kept lying beneath his throne so Shani's gaze could never harm him. When Hanuman came to Lanka in search of Mata Sita, he discovered Shani Dev bound and helpless. With his immense strength, Hanuman broke Shani's chains and freed him from Ravana's captivity.

    Shani's Promise of Gratitude

Freed and overjoyed, Shani Dev was filled with gratitude toward Hanuman. As a reward, Shani promised that he would never trouble anyone who is a devotee of Hanuman, and that those who worship Hanuman would be spared the worst of his harshness during Sade Sati and Dhaiya. In another well-loved version, Hanuman protected himself by smearing his body with oil when Shani sat on his shoulder, and Shani, in pain, agreed to spare Hanuman's devotees in exchange for the soothing oil.

    Why Shani Spares Hanuman's Devotees

Because of this promise, devotees believe that worshipping Hanuman is itself a powerful Shani remedy. Hanuman represents fearless devotion, humility and selfless service - exactly the qualities Shani rewards as the judge of karma. So those who chant the Hanuman Chalisa and live with honesty find that Shani's testing periods become gentler. It is not that Shani breaks his duty, but that a true Hanuman devotee has already cultivated the virtues Shani looks for.

    How Devotees Observe This

On Saturdays, devotees worship both Hanuman and Shani Dev together. A common practice is to offer mustard or sesame (til) oil - to Shani at his shrine and to Hanuman, often by lighting a chameli or til oil lamp. Many recite the Hanuman Chalisa along with Shani worship, light a lamp under a Peepal tree, and serve the poor and labourers, who are under Shani's care. This combined devotion is considered especially effective during Sade Sati and Dhaiya.

    Benefits of This Worship

Worshipping Hanuman alongside Shani is believed to soften the difficulties of Sade Sati and Dhaiya, grant courage and protection from fear, remove obstacles in work and finances, and protect from accidents and enemies. Above all, it builds the inner virtues of patience, honesty and humility that turn Shani's strict justice into steady, lasting blessings.

    Mantra for Hanuman and Shani

On Saturdays, chant the Hanuman mantra for protection:

    Om Hanumate Namah

    Follow with the Shani mantra:

    Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namah

Reciting the Hanuman Chalisa is itself considered a complete remedy. Light a til oil lamp, offer mustard oil to Shani and sindoor to Hanuman, and pray with a humble, honest heart for protection and patience.
